Oh geez... "cartoon characters climbing walls using crappy sprite rotation" looked bad in Super Mario World on the SNES; what makes them think it would look any better over 15 years later?

Not to detract from your point, but Super Mario World didn't use sprite rotation to make characters climb walls. They are separate sprites. They'd probably look better if they had been rotated versions of the normal ones...
