TDWTF ads

  •  I know it's popular to run an ad-blocker, but this has been bugging me for roughly a week here now. Alex, please fix?

  • Is it only happening in SeaMonkey? Tried any other browser?

    Also, what version of SM is that? - it looks an older one.

    Seamonkey

    I think we found TRWTF.

  • I think it is fair to say that SeaMonkey is not the problem here. It is his adblocker that is causing this.

    Don't blame the browser for what an extension does.

  • SeaMonkey 2.6 FWIW. And I did try another browser (Epiphany, webkit-based), but I saw nothingness in the place of ads. Don't know why, actually. Absolutely nothing should be blocked there.

    I didn't mention it in the OP, but I did not use an ad-blocker for that screenshot. In fact, the only extension I have is NoScript.

  • I found this in the HTML code:

    <img src="http://thedailywtf.com/tizes/a.aspx?ZoneID=1&amp;Task=Get&amp;Mode=HTML&amp;SiteID=1&amp;PageID=55152" width="160" height="600" border="0"  alt="">

    Sheesh, wtf is with this editor?

    Yep, I get the same result with FF9.0.1 when I turn off my add blocker but not NoScript (both or neither look OK). It's this noscript tag:

    <noscript>
      <a target="_blank" href="http://thedailywtf.com/tizes/a.aspx?ZoneID=1&Task=Click&Mode=HTML&SiteID=1&PageID=55152">
        <img width="160" height="600" border="0" alt="" src="http://thedailywtf.com/tizes/a.aspx?ZoneID=1&Task=Get&Mode=HTML&SiteID=1&PageID=55152">
      </a>
    </noscript>

    So, it looks like a deliberate thing to annoy people using script blockers. Or something.

    Pray tell, which browser should I then be using? Mozilla has been wrecking Firefox's UI since 3.0, Opera their own since 10.x, and Chrome has always been the odd one out.

    Thtat's the beauty: It doesn't matter! There's someone on the forum willing to mock whichever choice you make.

  • Why the hell would Alex fix this? Ads pay for the site, and by depriving him of the ad revenue, you're effectively stealing content. Cue blakeyrat's law in 3... 2..

    Did I mention I'm not using an ad-blocker, and even if we disregard blockers altogether, the ad is only displaying pure white.

    Uh, what ad? Here is the entire source of the destination page:

    Maybe it was an ad at one point, but it isn't now.

    That's actually a valid-ish 1x1-pixel GIF sent with the wrong MIME type.

    Yes you did in your reply to henke37, who said your adblocker was trwtf. At any rate, I don't care if you block or not, and it seems that my pathetic attempt to induce a blakeyrant has failed.

    To me, it looks like an alternate ad for browsers that can't run JavaScript - but Alex (or somebody) accidentally switched width and height around.

    Personally, I use Iron. It's the same as Chrome, but with the Google spyware removed at source code level. Works just great and is VERY fast. Oh: and it displays the 'XML Escape' page just fine.

  • Dude, you should turn your ad-blocker off, specially if it's a site that you visit and enjoy regularly. Web hosting is not free, you know.

  • <font size="+3">Just to clarify: When I wrote "I know it's popular to run an ad-blocker", I meant "Perhaps everyone else is running an ad-blocker and thus not noticing this"</font>

  • Way to not support the site we all know and love.  Turn off your adblocker, they're not even intrusive on this site.

  • Oh. So what you meant is that you don't have an ad-blocker?

    Maybe something is blocking javascript? You should check the settings menu, and make sure you don't have any extension that blocks it.

    Uh .....  how about the part where he has already said: @hhaamu said:

    I still say TRWTF is using Firefox's mildly retarded cousin.

    Just to clarify: everyone telling you not to adblock TDWTF is trolling you. Welcome to the forums.

    Cheer up! Your YHBT medal will be delivered to you as soon as you turn off your ad-blocker ; )

     You might find out that I wrote the oversize text in good humour, as evidenced by the tags.Anyway, I'd totally love a blakeyrant to this thread now.

  • I was half-expecting one, too; kinda disappointing he's not rising to the bait. Perhaps he's mellowing, or just more relaxed during the season to be jolly.

  • Guys if you want entertaining content on the site, go fucking write some. Stop begging me to do my blakeyrant thing in every fucking thread, I'm sick of it, you're all sick of it, and I feel like 80% of the posts here are just trolling me to get me to do it. It's pathetic.

  •  Oh. The trolls in this thread were meant for blakeyrat and not me. That makes sense. (Anyway, I'm just waiting for Alex to come back from wherever-he-was and fix this possible-copypaste-error.)

    Not sure what's more pathetic: that 80% of posts are blackeyrant troll attempts, or that you bite 97% of the time...

    Also, 63% of statistics are completely made up.

    I'm fairly certain he's at Code Mash. Hang tight and scroll loose until after the weekend.
