Thinking of emigrating to Britain - advice requested

How does the ancestral visa work?  Does it work for Australia, Canada, or New Zealand?

*** Any knowledge I have relates to Australian visas but I am not an immigration expert.  ***

I'm not sure I understand the question.

Are you asking if someone who has a British ancestral visa has the same rights regarding work in Australia as a British passport holder?  If that's the question then I'd say the answer is no.

Australia have (or at least had) a reciprocal agreement with the UK regarding 2 year working holiday visas but it appears that agreement only applies to British passport holders, not ancestral visa holders.

As I said, I'm no expert.  Have a look on the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship website for more information.

I'm led to believe you can't do a bunch of things in the US until you're 21. Over here I can do pretty much everything from 18.

The main thing is that you cannot legally be served alcohol. I can't think of anything else off the top of my head, but I'm sure there are states where there are other things. Another last gasp of federalism, as the Federal Government threatened to withhold highway funds if States didn't have at least a 21 year minimum drinking age. But then again, you can buy a gun here at 18.

Fair enough. My googling tells me the Americans can drive a lot earlier (~15-16, rather than 17 over here). The drinking thing is still a pain. How about gambling? (I only ask because we're planning a Las Vagas holiday at some point).

Yes, driving is usually 16, although the details vary by state, and there have been lots of restrictions put on new drivers in the last 20 years or so. Gambling is usually 21, but that often is due to the alcohol. Vegas is definitely 21. I've been to some Indian casinos where you only needed to be 18 to gamble.

As always, this is one of those "in some states" things. You have to be 21 to purchase most types of guns in Massachusetts, for example.
