Why do people do this?
-
I know I've posted something like this before, but I just ran into this on another project of another team...
//
/ I found comments intermixed with pseudo code here /
/ because the person thought that they were doing a /
/ really great job of documenting their process. /
/ Then they found out they were going to be laid off /
/ so they wrote about 200 lines of this crap and then/
/ did this: /i++;/ in the middle. There were math /
/ expr's all around the above bomb so it was VERY /
/ hard to see. Of course, the debugger found it, but /
/ b/c of the way it unscrambled the code, you could /
/ not see which "i++" it was in the long function. /

Haha! Nice. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that comment about the comment-bomb a comment-bomb in and of itself?
-
I'm certain something similar to this was on the front page once, but I don't know how to Google for it...
-
I remember that one. It's also straight out of the essay, "How to Write Unmaintainable Code".

Yep.

Did you think of this?
-
So the WTF is not using an IDE with color-coding of comments?

Did you think of this? That's the old post I was thinking of from a couple of projects ago - good find. I guess some things never change.

Good find, how were you able to dig it up?

Agreed. But now any time some unit testing freak says that the debugger is completely useless, I'll have a response for him, so thanks for that part.

I felt increbly tempted to create a fake link out of this, but I grew out of it. Enjoy the real link.

Well, doesn't pretty much everybody use an editor that color codes? But...200 lines of this! Mercifully, snoofle's post wasn't this brutal, but how often do you suppose you'd peruse this? Especially in an IDE, you're more likely to be navigating directly to methods, not scrolling through this giant mess.
