The Immeasurable Power of Murphy's Law

  • My laptop screen died a few months ago, so I've had it hooked up to the plasma.  I know, ghetto.  My eyes occasionally bleed from the trauma of it all.  Last night, I caught a porn-related virus that redirected me to something lame when I clicked on an MSDN link in google, and then instantly, the machine died and Vista wouldn't boot.

My recovery discs were too damaged to read, which left me with no choice but to open up my MSDN library and find a suitable OS.  I installed Windows 7 Enterprise 64, nuking everything on the drive in the process.  Au revoir la porn, and loads of source code for ancient projects that the world is now well rid of.

At this point today, the laptop screen was still dead.  I say to myself, "you lazy fuck, go order a new one".  So I did.  At 4PM I get a notice that the order has shipped.  At 5PM, the screen comes back to life on its own.

So, thanks alot Murphy, you demented fuck.

    BACKUP, BACKUP, BACKUP!

  • I was going to point out that you successfully proved the converese of Murphy's law (which isn't supposed to work). After all, you now will have two working laptops.

Then I realized you went from porn on a big plasma screen to a porn-free laptop with a (presumably small screen).

Looks like the laws of the universe are still intact. All those code samples checking for cases like 1==1 are still safe.

  • One day my monitor wouldn't turn on.  Checked the power cord, checked the outlet.  Nothing.  Dead.  Wouldn't turn on.  So I went out and bought a new one.  A couple days later my wife says "my brother wants to know if he can have your old monitor   He like to mess around with electronic stuff".  Sure.  It's not doing me any good.  A few days later he calls to tell me that he replaced the on/off switch, at a cost of about $2 and now it works fine.

Seriously?  External hard drive, dude!!   I'm petty stupid and clueless but a long time ago I figured that out.

What's to stop him hooking up the non-porn laptop to the plasma? Unless porn is wanted...

  • Dead laptop screen is almost always a bad backlight cable.

If windows is nuked you can almost always recover files with a live CD.

I'd like clarification here: did you order a new screen for your old laptop or a whole new laptop?

Why didn't you copy your important stuff to another location? You could have done that using the Windows 7 install disk itself.

I will admit that I have accidentally nuked my OS as well (I did have a backup). Also a long time ago I thought my CRT monitor was dead, took it to warranty repairs, turned out the power cable was loose.

Was this one of those fixed power cables, where you need to open up the monitor if the wires come loose from the circuit board or otherwise break? If so, taking it to the shop was justified.

On the other hand, if it had a standard power cable with an IEC connector on the monitor end, then you're TRWTF.

    Au revoir la porn

y u save porn on hard drive? There's enough "free" (add sponsored) porn sites around these days. Getting a virus from porn is SO 1990's.

This.  Although, some of those rare vintage goodies can be hard to find.

    Yeah, right.

Download/upload on a 3Mbps (or slower) connection. No thanks. I'll stick with my 2TB external hard drive which cost about the same as a couple months of "the cloud".

Suprised that you have time to reply twice between all the fapping.

Easy to hit the button twice by mistake when you're not used to using that hand.

    Yeah, anything under 20GB isn't a collection.
