The Panasonic (not so) Toughbook

  •  It can withstand water, cars, and jumping up and down on it. Panasonic, in fact, puts it through a rigorous testing process

But when it comes to UPS or FedEx even Panasonic knows well enough not to challenge them:

  • How badass would it be if the box said, "run over with truck".

I bet going to the UPS office to pick up a waiting package would be far more entertaining....

But I bet it could not withstand delivery by Dell. One time I witnessed them dragging a rack in the snow, banging it on every possible wall and door, and dropping it twice in the stairs (single flight down to the basement). I was so pissed, I almost did not stop them when they were about to plug the rack power cord (would have been interesting to see how the snow-filled fans in the bottom panel would have enjoyed a nice burst of electricity).

Based on my experience one just waits a year or two and, inevitably, the wireless and/or the touchscreen stop working completely. Granted these are machines that had been in a squad car for a year or so but cops+Toughbook=broken just about every time.

I use some ex-cop Toughbooks for various automotive-related things, and I have NO IDEA how the hell cops manage to stain the keyboards so readily. Seriously. They're GROSS. It doesn't help that Panasonic made the questionable decision of sticking white keyboards in black laptops in the first place, but jesus christ, I won't use them without putting on the same kind of gloves I use to keep hot transmission fluid from melting my flesh.

Gad, I've been using Facebook too much: I read your comment and started looking for the Like button.

    Anyway, well done.

Hey, that reminds me, we're having a home-made chilli sauce competition at my local tomorrow.

If you don't hear from me again, I got burnt!

Are they supposed to be hard to break?  I was talking with someone earlier this morning, and she suddenly started griping about how she'd just dropped her laptop (she said it was a Toughbook) and cracked the case, and the crack was near the power adapter and now the connector wasn't working, and she had to log off before the battery died.

(she said it was a Toughbook)

    She was lying.

No way that would kill a Toughbook.

  • About a dozen years ago we paid lots of money for a "rugged" notebook. Turned out to be an ordinary notebook surrounded by a rubber shell. After a few months we found that the rubber shell doesn't help at all with dust in the hinge. Cracked the hinge, never bothered to get it fixed. Cheaper to buy a dozen identical cheap desktops and swap parts as they gradually die off.
