Nagios FILE_FOUND?

  • I was putting together a new configuration for Nagios and came up with an error that struck me as odd.  The error has since been fixed, but I tweaked the config temporarily to re-create the basic error:

Error: Template 'template-core-switch' specified in host definition could not be not found (config file '/etc/nagios3/prodcfg/ournagios/host.cfg', starting on line 3)
Error: Template 'template-access-switch' specified in host definition could not be not found (config file '/etc/nagios3/prodcfg/ournagios/host.cfg', starting on line 17)

Does this make it a FILE_FOUND error?

  • I don't think I'm not getting it.

    What isn't not the problem?

I'd be far from lying if I denied that I couldn't help but fail to disagree less.

    More like a FAIL_FOUND error.

I really need that on a mug or t-shirt or something.

  •  What does it say about me that I don't see anything wrong with that error message?  The specified file is where the host definition is.  The host definition specifies a template which can't be found.  Just like a C compiler might tell you exactly where it found a token for which it could not find a definition.  I guess I just spent too much time doing Network Operations.

    Read it again. Slower.

Try counting the number of nots in the error messages.

I'd be far from lying if I denied that I couldn't help but fail to disagree less.
I'd be close to the truth if I denied that I couldn't help but fail to disagree less.
I'd be close to the truth if I claimed that I could choose to fail to disagree less.
I can truthfully claim that I could choose to fail to disagree less.
I could choose to fail to disagree less.
I could not choose to succeed to agree more.
    I could not agree more.

Good grief, it took me 15 minutes to resolve that sentence.

Edit:  I guess my tag of "I couldn't agree less" isn't going to make it today.  Way to go, CS!  So I'll just edit the post instead and hope nobody noticed that I reversed the logic of the conclusion a few times... I'm still not sure I interpreted that right.

I think this transition is invalid.

    • I could choose to fail to disagree less.
    • I could choose to fail to agree more.
    • I could choose to agree the same amount or less.
    • I could agree the same amount or less.

In your interpretation, whether he can agree the same amount or less is unspecified, and he can't agree more. In my interpretation, he definitely can agree the same amount or less, and whether he can agree more is unspecified.

  • By no means is my interpretation rigorous. I knew the phrase boiled down to either "I couldn't agree more" or "I couldn't agree less", so I fudged it. However, I am still not certain if I boiled it correctly... Someone else needs to take a stab at it.

Keep boiling.  At the very bottom of the pan you should end up with either "I agree" or "I don't agree".

It took bouncing it off another person and studying his original analysis to figure it out.

After you responded, I realized that we were taking this from the wrong side.  Let's work it starting from the right side.

I'd be far from lying if I denied that I couldn't help but fail to disagree less.  If you couldn't help but fail to disagree less, that means you agree.

I'd be far from lying if I denied that I {agree}. If you'd be far from lying, then you're telling the truth.

{Truly} I denied that I {agree}.  It's now obvious.  If you deny that you agree, then you disagree.

And so you don't believe it's a FILE_FOUND error.  Perhaps a FILE_NOT_NOT_FOUND error?  Regardless, that's an interesting mug.  I may have to get me one of those . . .

The discussion about what this phrase means demonstrates why trying to use natural language for programming is a poor idea.

    Also, perhaps it's a FILE_FOUND_NOT

Any argument here is kind of pointless in a world where people actually say "I miss not spending time with my girlfriend".

Are you suggesting we bring our girlfriends to work and passionately argue with them regarding the compliance of poorly written specifications instead of yelling about it online here?

I have to admit that I failed to disagree less.

I have to admit that I managed to disagree the same or more.

I have to admit that I managed to agree less.

I think that's the solution. It's weird though.

Googlizer says, if you first translate it to German using Google Translate and back into English afterwards:

I think I can not help it closed, but less than the rejection did not agree.
    It claims the translation chain is: de -> sl -> et -> no -> ht -> iw -> hr -> tr -> pt-PT -> bg -> de

I don't even know what languages most of these stand for.

German -> Slovenian -> Estonian -> Modern Norwegian -> Haitian -> the former language code for Hebrew which now should be "he" -> Croatian -> Turkish -> The One True Portuguese -> Bulgarian -> Still German.

I work on internationalization a little bit.

Google Language Tools, English to Chinese (Simplified) and back to English:

I will be away from the lie, if I do not admit that I could not help but do not agree less.

That's actually not bad.  The intermediate sentence is: 我会远离撒谎,如果我不承认,我不由得不同意少。

  •  Well, isn't that just charming.  It tells me there was a problem and my message wouldn't post, then goes ahead and posts it anyway.

Presumably you tried to put a tag on it. Lately that causes the error page to pop up, but the post is successfully posted.
