Happiness is...

  • You are working on a list of "small" adjustments to a REALLY old site your company's made from before a time when things like code reuse, ASP includes and decent programming or design methods were heard of, forcing you to apply these small adjustments to EVERY SINGLE ONE of the 20 "templates" inside this pseudo-dynamic, crappest of crap site. You are ready to kill yourself, wading through 5 feet of nested tables with sliced filler images -- just to change a logo, when...

...you get a call from the project manager telling you to stop, because he's planned a meeting with the client about a full redesign of this site.

    AHHHH.

  • <FONT face=Tahoma>yeah that would be the happiest moment of my life

if there are no methods of source control in place then might as well create your own, like create a temporary backup copy...but oh well, it's just a "small" adjustment so i'll probably do what you did myself...

    but those last minute calls...aarrgh!!!

really hate it when that sort of thing happens</FONT>

  • Yeah.  It's not as much fun when you get that call 6 months in, just as you're getting ready to roll the updated application out.

  • Now that sucks.

Just to be clear, I wasn't being sarcastic. I was factualyl dealing with a crap site and would love to give it a complete overhaul and bring it up to date with today's sites, apply the things I've learned since that one went live, a clean restart, etc.

Speaking of sarcasm, sometimes it's apparently not apparent when someone's being sarcastic.

On another forum I visit, we have this custom of colouring the text orange.

<font color="#ffa500">VB is the best language evar!

Also, I totally love how all STYLE attributes are stripped and CS's formatting stuff is rendered comepletely useless! Party!

It just happened to me.  I was told to 'fix' the old code, but I had to keep the same interface, language, and bug-for-bug compatability with the old business logic.  There -were- no design docs, and there was no-one in the company who could tell me what the business logic WAS.  I keep planning on posting some of the WTFs here, and my boss OK'd that, if the company-specific stuff was stripped.  Due to the design or lack therof, that's REALLY hard.  It had just over 40K lines of classic ASP.  I had to rewrite the entire data interface layer, fix any number of database problems, and try to make the thing not crash 2-3 other systems every day.

About 4 months in, it was Ok'd for me to make minor changes the interface.

    Now that's a <FONT color=#ffa500>great</FONT> idea!

    Er....

    I mean that ;)
