How to tell the entire fucking world that your website is down

  • Got this promotional email from Pingdom, who we use to monitor some of our sites.

    http://external.pingdom.com/email/news_twitteralerts.html

So now you can tell the entire world that your websites were down and for how long so they can follow it on http://twitter.com/pingdomalert.

  • Ahh, the irony of using Twitter to advertise downtime.

  • TRWTF is the ridiculous amount of Twitter usage. Our local news station has been using it (and displaying a huge Twitter logo across the screen at the end of every broadcast) despite the fact that they already had fully working SMS, RSS, and email alerts. I'm going to just sit back and laugh maniacally when it finally dies.

That said, this is an even more insane and pointless use for it.

  • yeah it won't die though, somebody like google will buy it. "Biz" Phillips or whatever his name is needs to sell out while he's still got something to sell

Pingdom had a report not long ago showing that twitter's downtime is actually signifigantly improved.  Linkedin is the new posterboy for downtime.

Don't count on it dying anytime soon. Twitter is going to be like reality TV shows. They are here to stay and add more crap to the world.

I wish I was wrong. But the social media is here to stay.

I just hope the hype settles down and finds it's rightfull place (somewhere far away from the salespeople in my workplace).

  • Social network sites in general belong far away from not only marketing, but business in general. For the same reason, I cannot think of a legitimate use for real life businesses being in Second Life, so I don't know why there was such a controversy over whether employees should have dress codes there.

I actually nearly puked when I saw this URL at the bottom of a VW commercial: http://www.facebook.com/VW

Dude, I work at a "Integrated Communications agency" (new fancy name for an ad agency that does, PR, BTL marketing, web stuff, SEO and online marketing).

I am feeling the whole weight of pointless uses of social media on daily basis.

Only time will tell these people how wrong (or not) they are. In the meantime, "we" ride the wave and squeeze all the money possible from the clients.

The secret is to give them numbers, presentations and videos on how Facebook and Twitter are the biggest revolution since the invention of TV, and how worried they should be, because not having twitter will send their company directly to the bankrup pit.

So you gotta run, because basically Social Media is so cool and fast, that the whole world is being left behind and obsolete.

Did you know that by 2020, 1 of every 4 new couples in USA will meet online?

    Be afraid, be very afraid

  •  The only valuable twitter account is fireland.

The real power of social media is its ability to completely destroy the separation between private and public life.  Did you do a bunch of Jagerbombs last night, get thrown out of a strip club for trying to climb on stage and end up puking on your shoes in an alley?  Now everyone knows it.  I predict one of two outcomes: either shame will make a comeback, social media will suffer from the backlash and people like myself who have avoided embarassing ourselves in public shall consolidate power by blackmailing everyone else.  Or society will devolve (evolve?) to the point where Romanesque public orgies are the norm and concepts like "shame" and "privacy" become as antiquated as your Grandma's 1st generation iPhone.  Either way, I am well positioned to reap the rewards of brutal authority and sexual deviancy that change will bring.

I want to send this to my management who think that Social Media is this Great New (cough) Thing that we all Must Have.
