Hammersmith 3

  •  Google Maps seem to have found an extra Hammersmith Tube station. If you follow the link below, you'll see the 2 real stations at the south (in fact, their entrances are only about 50 yards apart). Then there's a magic new station half a mile to the north, right next to my house! Except that there isn't - it's a depot where they drive trains in and hit them with hammers and stuff. Nice idea though.

  • Party at vr602's place!

  • The Real WTFTM is that you call it a "tube" station when it's clearly a covered platform.

    Are you serious?

  • Almost all of the London "tube" was built by digging trenches and then covering them over.  It's called the "cut and cover" method of tunnelling and it's very efficient, so long as the people living above the tunnel site don't mind.

Uh, no.  Only the Metropolitan (including Hammersmith & City branch), District and Circle lines were built by cut and cover.  The remaining lines - Bakerloo, Central, Jubilee, Northern, Piccadilly, Victoria and Waterloo and City were all built by deep-bore tunneling.

Right.  And this has nothing to do with Google Maps which is showing the above-ground tracks.  Clearly the photo isn't showing open cut-and-cover tunnels.

No, but the forum software won't let me add a "humor" tag.

Indeed, and another thread derailed by him as well. How sad.
