UPS' Excellent Documentation

  • So I decided it's time to integrate some shipping functionality into our application, starting with UPS tracking. After exploring the UPS website for a few minutes I quickly and very excitedly find out that they have a full set of online tools that I can interact with using XML. Great!

So I go to create my account, get all my developer access to their tools and download. So far so good! Now, how do I use this stuff? Let's see...

I think things are so much clearer now...

  •  The WTF amuses me, but if only there were some way to put that image into your post...

    This is of no consequence.

  • Yikes, I thought my experience with FedEx integration was hard work... they at least have some documentation even if its not always complete!

    Happy? Since I can't edit anymore :)

Not really.  I guess I should go back on the meds.

The hell it isn't.  I had to click on a link, and then click again to close the window.  I'm not made of clicks, man!  Do you want my finger to get RSI?

Haha, well I hope then that you'll never get the urge to play a game like Diablo or Titan's Quest. =)

On that note, hope they release Diablo 3 sometime soon!

If you run out of clicks there are plenty of keyboard shortcuts remaining.

And what does one use to type said keyboard shortcuts?  That's right: fingers.  Why, I'm risking future disability just to educate you people right now.  The least you could do is worship me like a God.

  • At least the pic was a clicky link.  I'm getting far too much practice at "double-click ctrl-c ctrl-t ctrl-v enter"ing plaintext addresses.

A God who can't heal his own gnarled fingers?  You're going to have to do better than that.

If you're using Firefox: Text Link

If you're using Firefox: Text Link

Linkification is also nice.  It supports the same double-click functionality as Text Link, and also adds the ability to convert text links to clickable links (with the option of overriding the colour of the converted links, and the ability to disable the feature on site-by-site basis).

A God who can't heal his own gnarled fingers?  You're going to have to do better than that.

This is what's happens when you believe in a single god.  Your single, monolithic diety may have the power to heal fingers and any other power you imagine, but what happens when a change request comes in?  The original Architect of your god is probably long gone and his design long forgotten.  If you wanted to add the power to make mushrooms talk, you'd probably find yourself wading through hundreds of sections designed to heal fingers, or make the sky rain fire, or trick humans into thinking the planet is millions of years old.

If you'd just switch to a distributed diety system, none of this would happen.  Each diety in my pantheon is a modular unit that can be added or removed at runtime.  If, for some crazy reason, you decided that you no longer needed a god of excessive complaining about minor transgressions, I could be returned to mortality with the click of a single button.  Take that same example: in order to add a god of talking mushrooms, you'd just have to extend the base diety class (which contains the necessary code for prayers, sacrifices, and other message handling) and plug it in.  Simple, agile, effective.

So, yes, I can't heal fingers because it's not my job (It's Carl's domain, and he and I aren't talking this eon).  Other than my ability to complain loudly and endlessly over trivial matters, I'm much like you (only cooler and better endowed).  You can laugh at me if you want, but ask yourself, what if you needed mushrooms to talk at a sales conference call next Tuesday?  Which system would seem crazy then?

Oh, also I can throw lightning bolts.
