    Do you really think allowing that would be beneficial?  It would not only be unfair to the competition, but likely also harmful to customers in the end.  After all competition has gone bankrupt or otherwise disappeared, the monopolist can decrease development to a minimum and raise prices as they please, including annual or monthly fees.  In the software business there are still other dangers, such as piracy increasing if the change in price is too abrupt.  But looking at the prices of Microsoft products, they are rising at an astounding rate.  I wonder how long it will be take until a premium Windows license (such as you'll want for serious gaming) costs as much as the hardware for a high-end computer?  They've already reached the prices of low-end hardware with Vista Ultimate.

    Low-end?! Vista Ultimate costs 515€, which is the price of a very decent PC.
