Unrealistic contract expectations

  • Have any of you guys done any contract work?  I have an account
with a website that matches business looking for one-off software
development, with interested programmers.  It sounded like a good
idea at the time, but now I keep getting project descriptions that make
    me go WTF???

    Take this one for example:

    ----------

    Project ID: 192934

Title: ASP.NET Database with SQL Server Backend

Category: Programming / Software / Database Development
    Description:

<script></script>We are looking for a programmer with good ASP.NET and

SQL Server skills. We require from scratch an ASP.NET Front End that can access records and a SQL back end that will store the information.

    I
am not an expert but i think this should not take too long, more
information will be given for the programmer with the right bid and
    experince.

    Jeff

    ----------

he needs a front end that accesses a database.  Yeah, that's what
"front end" means.  This doesn't tell me anything at all about
what he wants done.  How am I supposed to know if it's something
I'm interested in?  And how can he say it wont take too long?

Here's another one, I realize that this is lengthy, but I post it to
make a point.  He's got all these requirements and he wants it
done in 10 days??  WTF??  It will take a week just to get an
SRS written up for all that!

Am I just naive here or what?

    Project ID: 192382

    Title: Multiple Listing Service-MLS-database

Category: Programming / Software / Database Development

    Description:

    Overall:::

Looking for someone to set up a database to display information received through a data-push nightly.

    To explain in more detail:

    Some
of you may understand how the MLS system works, but for those of you
that do not, here are the details. MLS - Multiple Listing Service -
compiles all realtor listings within any region it services. As a
realtor gets a new listing, they will enter the information about that
home into the MLS database (including photos). The MLS system has ALL
the homes listed by realtors in that region. In my case, this region
covers 7 counties, and at any given time the database will have all the
information on thousands of homes for sale. The company that compiles
all this information pushes to my server all the data needed to display
these listings any way we choose. This data is pushed to my server
    NIGHTLY.

    What I need:

I need a programmer to get this data
from the files into the database..and have them displayed within the
website. I need complete search-ability by county, price , bedrooms,
bathrooms, etc. I also need the customer to be able to fill out a form
to be notified anytime a new listing is entered into the database that
    meets their criteria.

    Other details:

I am pretty sure this is
a fairly simple project for the right programmer. I have zipped a
couple of files to show you how the data arrives to the server.

    IMPORTANT
    NOTE
The company pushing this data to my server will only push the
data in the format you find in the files. Since it is a nightly data
push, we have to maintain the structure of those files. It will be the
programmers job to figure out how to get the data from thes files into
the database..and in turn, onto the website with full search-ability.

    <script></script>

    The
zipped files are only a sample of all files pushed to my server. In
all, there would be a total of 6 of the idx_1.dic files...and 6 of the
    idx_1.txt files.

    example: idx_1.txt, idx_1_dic, idx_2.txt , idx_2_dic, idx_3.txt, idx_3_dic, etc to 6.

    Also
not included in the zipped files provided here is a standard zip file
of all the photos of the homes. The database program will need to be
able to unzip this file and display the photos appropriately.

    PLEASE
make sure you understand the job before bidding! If you make a low bid,
and I accept it, you will need to make sure to finish the job to 100%
    acceptability within the time-frame specified.

Looking to have this job completed within the next 10-14 days.

PLEASE ASK QUESTIONS before making a bid.

    This
project will be duplicated on multiple websites, so I will need details
if it involves more than simply backing up the datbase and installing
    on future websites.

"Upon completion of the project, compensation will take the form of a pizza party. You have your choice of Chucky Cheese or Pizza Hut*"

  • The Biggest WTF... new Fox reality show/competition

Funny. I don't mean to berate a dead horse, but when I made the font smaller in the editor, it turned out being bigger in the post...

  • Guru.com, by any chance?

The problem with those types of sites is the type of people who post projects

1/3 of them are looking for Indian contractors or Indian companies to do it on the cheap

1/3 of them are utterly unrealistic, expecting it to either be done in
1/10 the time needed and only willing to pay Burger King wages

1/6 of them are college kids looking to have their homework done for
them.  They also can only pay BK wages, and if you remember
college-  nothing was ever as easy as it should be.

1/6 of them are actually looking for rela contractors for fair
wages.  Unfortunately, 2/3 of this group are a bit clueless and
can look like group 2, and these few have lots of bidder.
