Moderator Thread: Revisited #2

     Ever?  You mean, since 2006 when you joined?  Man, you are old school!

    There is this thing called quoting...

  • @WeatherGod said:

    I am also sure he would take it more seriously if some of MPS's nemesises (nemesisii?) also speak out.

    Indeed. The people supporting me in these two threads and the last ones with Mikey sure weren't all my friends.

    I tried explaining to Jeff S that the community already decided about this, and his view lost.

    He said he didn't care and that he would just keep acting like a child to me. What else can I do? At least people know about it now.

    See, that is the thing though, he didn't use sarcasm tags, because he means it.

    You know whats funny? I just realized something.  I have suceeded! All you kids are doing the last few days is running around creating tags, flaming me, trolling on about me, talking about me on IRC, making jokes about me, devoting entire threads to me, obsessing about did I delete your post, and so on .... I actually did control your thoughts.   Keep it going!  Let me continue to be the point of your obsession.  Why not? I'll be laughing harder than anyone else!

    OK, I can put up with a regular user being a troll/flamer, but I will not stand for a moderator acting this childish.  Jeff S, don't make me have to go back over your posts to see how frequent this behavior is.  I remember when ammoQ discovered that some of us had created a whole religion around him, and he still didn't let it get to his head.

    Remember, if enough of us say so, I am sure we can convince Alex (the only god above ammoQ) to revoke your moderator rights.  I am also sure he would take it more seriously if some of MPS's nemesises (nemesisii?) also speak out.

    It was a joke.  I thought we could do that around here. Guess not. Got it. Please, complain to Alex!  Point out all of the very rude and offensive name-calling on my behalf, all of the personal insults I've directed towards everyone, and so on.  If you feel I have indeed stooped to their level, then you may have missed the names (the c-word comes to mind) I've been called ealier in this thread.  And note that I did not "moderate" or censor anything on this thread, because insults directed towards me are certainly on-topic here and no one else's posts are being flamed.

  • @Jeff S said:

    And note that I did not "moderate" or censor anything on this thread, because insults directed towards me are certainly on-topic here and no one else's posts are being flamed.

    That only means you might have learned from the ridiculously childish act of locking the last thread.

  • @Jeff S said:

    It was a joke.

    I'm pretty sure jokes have to be funny.  I think it's a requirement or something.

    @Jeff S said:

    Nobody said anything about name-calling, he's referring to your complete carelessness and the fact that you seem to find it amusing that a good deal of forum regulars do not like what you are doing.

    @Jeff S said:

    And note that I did not "moderate" or censor anything on this thread, because insults directed towards me are certainly on-topic here and no one else's posts are being flamed.

    You locked the last thread before anyone could even jump in, you dipshit.  Stop trying to pretend you aren't the little fascist douchebag you really are.

    Maybe he means he is a joke.

    Because otherwise he might realize that his words aren't the thing being objected to, it is his actions.

  • @Jeff S said:

    But we are all welcome here.

    Being welcome and being allowed to speak are two completely different concepts.  I know you're kind of bad at this whole "reasoning" thing, but don't let your repeated failures discourage you!

    @Jeff S said:

    It is our right of freedom to speech.

    There are no rights on a private message board.  However, a community is a self-regulating entity.  People participate of their own free will and if this place becomes as miserable as you yourself, then people will leave.

    @Jeff S said:

    It's cute -- I am not welcome by the IRC kids!

    You are so obsessed with our little IRC channel.  Everyone is free to join, we do not ban, kick or silence anyone.  However, I suspect that's why you don't want to go there, because you know you can't silence people you disagree with.

    @Jeff S said:

    Sadly, that is indeed all we really have left here in these forums.

    So now you're just insulting everyone who continues to post here.  That's excellent.  We all appreciate and respect your judgement.

    @Jeff S said:

    By practicing your civil rights and being "men of the people", you've driven pretty much everyone else away.  Kuddos on that -- it must take some work.

    I do not consider myself a "man of the people", but I do demand the ability to speak my mind and for others to do the same.  Also, learn to spell "kudos" you goddamned braindead ape.

    @Jeff S said:

    Not what I would call respecting the civil rights of others, but we know you are a little selective on which virtues you decide to uphold.

    See, even when it comes to civil rights what you say makes no sense.  I do not have the ability to silence people here or in real life.  I can convince them through argument and verbal abuse to voluntarily amend their ways, but it is of their own free will.  Some people choose to learn, some do not.  Those same people are free to try to convince me to see the world their way and sometimes they do.  This is how the interchange of ideas works.  It's one of those exotic things people do in places like college and the workplace, but I'm guessing you don't really know what either of those is like.  Well, you know when you go to pick up your welfare check and you see it's a little bit less than you thought so you go down to the bus stop and try to convince your dealer to sell you the rock at a little bit of a discount because you don't have quite as much money?  And how he's free to accept your low ball or to break your kneecaps with a tire iron?  It's, um..  kinda.. sorta..  like that.

  • @Jeff S said:

    Then you forgot your sarcasm tags...  In a thread like this, it makes you lose credibility when you post something that might be interpreated as supporting the opponent's point, and then go back and, in hindsight, clarify yourself.  Make it clear the first time.  It isn't the rude and offensive name-calling that upsets me.  I am a grown-up, and I just don't let childish name-calling ruffle my feathers.  Personally, I think it isn't the best way to deal with a person, but that's my own personal style.  Have you notice that MPS or morb hardly ever use name-calling or rudeness towards me or some of the other more coherent members of this forum?

    I am glad you haven't censored anything on this thread, and that is great for free and open discourse.  We really clear the air and make ourselves understood.  Keep in mind that the issue being discussed here is not any censorship in this thread.  The issue is MPS's brand of self-policing vs. Jeff S.'s brand of self-policing.  While I don't like how threads derail out of control (yes, it would be initially derailed, but it tends to be reactions to the derailment that really spirals out of control), at least no information is censored.  Your brand of self-policing is to utilize your moderator rights to remove posts.  If anything, this only works to teach the author that such behavior is not desired, and no one else learns.

    I would also like to point out that I think it is important that the people who do this 'policing' are people who actually understand the forum (and appreciate it), and don't just want to change it for their power trip.

    Actually understanding the jokes and meme's here would sure be a nice quality in a mod, and so far, Jeff S has demonstrated the opposite.

  • On a side note, I see it mentioned several times that Jeff S locked the original thread (I am assuming you are talking about "Moderator Thread: Revisited").  I have never noticed it being locked, and it isn't locked at this moment.  Can a thread be unlocked?

    Yes, it can, as evidenced by that thread.  Just Jeff S trying to cover up his tracks again.   Believe me, it was locked, otherwise MPS never would have created this thread and I wouldn't have called Jeff S a cunt.

  • @WeatherGod said:

    Apparently.

    How mature, a guy you can really trust.

  • @morbiuswilters said:

    Yeah really, that is fascinating that he would think the forum people are that stupid to think that I would stop posting there if it wasn't locked... Maybe next he will edit our posts to erase any evidence too.

  • All the moderators have my full support. Just to make that clear. Have fun with each other while I'm on vacation.

    MPS, I rarely find your posts interesting or funny, but I defend to the death (of Jeff S) your right to post

    Unfortunately, MPS doesn't defend yours. He constantly "reports" post to moderators. [...] He is kind of like the kid who cries wolf at everyone else, but when someone moderates or reports him, he cries about "freedom of speech".  [...]

    Wo cares what MPS reports in a PM? Just ignore him if you can't handle that. He is not a mod who deletes posts and you shouldn't be either.   He is indeed a cry-wolf kid and his fate is like that story:  for the sheer volume of his posts, I stopped paying attention to them long ago.  If that means missing out on the occasional salient remark, too bad for him.

  • MPS, you're funny but you take it to the extreme, and it really tends to hurt the discussions because you'll throw in these random, quasi-flamebait posts for no other reason, it seems, than to call the OP an idiot or insult someone who made a comment you don't agree with.  I don't know how that's construed as contributing to the forum, and I'm quite frankly apalled and disgusted that so many people are actually defending that kind of behavior.

    For what it's worth, there's no such thing as freedom of speech on a privately-owned (in this case, by Alex) forum, and the 1st Amendment only applies to Congress, not to individuals.

    Jeff, I know we hashed out our disagreement earlier, but I cannot resist the urge to throw your own words back in your face here: If you need to explain to everyone over and over that you are "being funny", that generally means you're not doing such a good job. If you want to be a funny guy, maybe you need an editor?

    Very true indeed!  "Joke" was the wrong word to use -- it certainly was not funny in any traditional sense, but it certainly wasn't posted in all seriousness as well.  That would normally be obvious, but around here where the goal of the vocal minority is to take words, twist them, and so on, it becomes difficult to post much of anything and no matter how you try to frame it, it will be taken out of context, torn apart, flamed, etc.

    Which is kind of the issue many people are having with these forums in general, and why most of the users other than that vocal minority have been driven away.

  • @Jeff S said:

    and why most of the users other than that vocal minority have been driven away.

    Citation needed.

    Of course the mods can "handle it". And, of course, we usually ignore him!  No problem there.  Just thought people might find it interesting that he continually lashes out at other posts and complains constantly to the mods about his fellow users, yet of course if mods do anything about it, in his mind it becomes censorship.  That's all.

  • I already told you no posts in this thread are being deleted.  At least by me.

  • @Jeff S said:

    So the way you decided to show this was by randomly deleting posts from various regulars and engaging in childish mod abuse?

    Sounds like a good idea to me...

    And once again, ammoQ asked me to not go after various people who abuse the rules. Those rule include meta discussion and off topic discussion that derails threads. Others can (and have) backed me up on this, because they were told the same thing at the same time.

    Using the report abuse button was the only way to let him know and call his attention to these things. No one had any clue that there would be a spiteful vindictive asshole on the other side who would take personal offense at regulars doing what another mod told them to do.

    Go ahead and post the reports, and make sure you attach the posts that were reported. You seem to think you are holding some huge piece of evidence against me, go for it. I have a tip for you though, the report abuse button doesn't censor anyone, it just lets an admin know about something. Not sure if you missed out on that aspect...

    The real question is, since most people that have responded are not agreeing with you and they don't seem to care about this 'huge issue' that you seem to be making, are you going to step down and stop being an asshole? Or will you continue to be an asshole and degrade the quality of this forum?

    If you post this 'evidence' against me and no one cares (hint: they wont) are you prepared to step down like a man? Or will you you just keep going?

  • @Jeff S said:

    I already told you no posts in this thread are being deleted.  At least by me.

    You see what I did here? It is called quoting. That way people know EXACTLY what you are talking about.

    Instead, I see you just want to make the thread as confusing as possible...

    So, after reporting all of these violations, what should happen?  When you report a post as "stupid", "off-topic", "troll", "dead thread", etc, what should the moderators do about it?  What resolution are you looking for when you report these posts?

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

    Indeed. Many of MPS's complaints are already taken care of by the time I read them (i.e. because I've seen the offending post and thought the same), in some cases I agree and moderate as requested and yet in other cases, I ignore the complaint.There is nothing wrong, as long as your own posts execeed the standard you expect from other people.

  • For example, here's MPS's latest report:

    Forum: "Side Bar" WTF
    Posted: Aug 7, 4:25 PM [GMT -5]
    Post Subject: Re: Linux in public
    Post author: AccessGuru

    This thread is fucking lame.

    Your reason for reporting was: "needless troll"

    A user commented on a thread being lame.  A very valid, reasonable point of view. Certainly relevant to the topic -- it is commenting specifically on the thread itself, right?  Yet, you accuse this person of being a troll.  What action should be taken to resolve this?  Why is this post a "needless troll"?  How does it differ, from, say, a post that simply calls a person a "retard" or a "cunt" or something like that?  As I asked you in the PM -- is the rule you cannot insult a thread, but you can insult other users?  What's the guideline here?

    Please explain your rules so we all can understand how you feel this forum should be run.

  • @Jeff S said:

    This post is no different than the posts that were 'mugged'. ammoQ decreed that this behavior would stop. Just about everyone stopped using 'the mug'.

    So naturally, this post was reported under the same standard.

    @Jeff S said:

    Yet, you accuse this person of being a troll.

    Wrong. I stated the post is a troll. Just because someone makes a troll post doesn't mean they are a troll. Reading comprehension should probably be a requirement for being a mod.

    @Jeff S said:

    How does it differ, from, say, a post that simply calls a person a "retard" or a "cunt" or something like that?

    Remind us all again where this happened where it was not warranted?

    @Jeff S said:

    Why don't you ask ammoQ? Clearly he understands the rules here, since the forums have been running fine until you started this "I dont get it, but I am going to do something about it" campaign.

  •  @MasterPlanSoftware said:

      .. selective quoting, ignoring questions, arguing semantics to avoid discussing actual issues, name dropping, etc ...

    Just as I thought. Thanks for your input and for clearing things up.

    Also, you might want to read the other moderation threads, where the rest of the community here outlines the rules which everyone should be running off of now.

  • @Jeff S said:

    Just as I thought. Thanks for your input and for clearing things up.

    Ok then, obviously you made your mind up, and you don't understand forum communication. I think I am making myself very clear to you, and I think everyone else understands what I am saying.

    So go ahead on your little holy war if you wish.

  • @Jeff S said:

    Personally, I don't give a shit if people want to say a thread is lame, but a lot of people get their panties in a twist over it.  We were asked to stop handing out The Mug because it was causing flamewars and we complied because we didn't want to make things more difficult for anyone.  We are merely holding others to the same standard we are forced to.  If MPS or myself were to call a thread lame we would inspire mass outrage.  I could really give a flying fuck if people are pissed off over it, but ammoQ asked us to refrain from commenting on threads we didn't like.  We are merely holding the other posters to the same flawed, skewed standard.

    I also think it's fine to call someone a retard or a cunt if they are acting like one.  If you are bothered by these types of words you have psychological issues and should try to work on that instead of wringing your hands over a few insults on the Internet.  You don't have to agree with my assessment, but I can't understand the need for silencing me you guys seem to have.  If someone is acting like a moron, they should be called on it.  Sure, I could use "polite" language, but trying to tell someone they are stupid without actually saying something offensive is like spraying cologne on a rotting corpse.  The fact is, you are saying something offensive and sometimes it's just best to get it out and move on.  It's just a damn Internet forum, after all.  I just can't fathom why people would let themselves get worked up over what some practically anonymous person wrote about them.

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

    So go ahead on your little holy war if you wish.

    See, as I've said all along:  I knew you had the potential to be funny!   Well done.

    I'll try to "tone down" my little holy war.  Sorry for all the personal, unprovoked, immature attacks on you.  you know, starting threads to complain about you and all that.  Very lame on my part.  Shows that I am pretty thin-skinned, huh?  Luckily, you have proven to be a much better man than myself by not resorting to such tactics.

  • @Jeff S said:

    you know, starting threads to complain about you and all that.

    You do realize the idea behind bringing an abusive moderator to the forum's public eye right? Are you this far removed from the whole forum concept?

    @Jeff S said:

    Luckily, you have proven to be a much better man than myself by not resorting to such tactics.

    You see... here is the thing... no one has really attacked you personally at all. And no one but you started any of this.

    And the real kicker of it all? You are a mod! And you are acting like a little baby!

  • @morbiuswilters said:

    We are merely holding others to the same standard we are forced to.

    Do you really, honestly believe that?

    You know that I just picked a random example, right?

    Again, no one is answering my questions: Why report posts as "not funny" ? why report posts as "not a wtf"?  And on and on.  That's fine if a specific forum rule dictated by a moderator is violated, but what about all the other ones?

    Another example:  bstorer reported a post with "do I need to give a reason" because someone insulted MPS:

    Forum: General Discussion
    Posted: Aug 6, 4:59 PM [GMT -5]
    Post Subject: Deleted posts

     MPS,
    I realize you're suffering from near stroke level OCD regarding what
    and how people post. Perhaps you're too stupid to recognize a quote
    from big lebowski, but it all equates to prissiness and cleanliness
    issues, as well as power issues that mark a very small minded and
    desperate person. I think you must be near suicidal with self loathing
    to feel the need to constantly police a little forum like this with so
    much sweaty effort. Congratulations on achieving little tin god with so
    much splendor.

    So, why is that post a violation but, if MPS calls him a name or writes a similar long, rambling attack on his character, that somehow doesn't break that same rule?  Who gets to judge who is "stupid and deserving" and who is not?

    Should we review some more?

    I am not here to judge MPS. I am here to ask: What are the rules? What are the guidlines in his little world?  How should this all work?

    Here's another, reported by MPS:

    This guy admits to being a troll, and is now just clogging the thread with quoting abuse.

    Still, you seem to underestimate the big improvements that have been made

    I LOVE nested quotes btw.

    Big improvements eh? Like being unable to make an array that goes from 1900 to 2050?

    Hold on a second, that's not an improvement!

    Why was this reported?  What specific forum rule does this violate?  What is the reasoning and logic behind this?

    Again -- I don't want judgement on MPS as a person or a forum user.  We all have more than enough info on that to form pretty conclusive opinions.

    Did you ever think that maybe you could just simply ignore it?  Remember, you are a mod.  You have the vast power to simply... do nothing!  Sure, it is annoying to recieve all of those abuse reports, but remember that the power to delete posts and lock threads is a powerful one.  Yes, I can see how MPS's posts that were deleted could be seen as a double-standard when he repeatedly reports other insults and such to the moderators.  However, this is a fine line to define, and is probably very subjective, anyway.

    Personally, I see no point in deleting posts unless it is spam being feed in by spambots or the completely blatantly crazy stuff from the users like TedsBrotherTed or whatever that was.  Sure, I don't like it when a thread derails because someone over-reacted to a post made by MPS or Morbius or anyone else.  I am in no way defending what MPS does, I am merely speaking out against deleting posts and locking threads.

    I overall agree.  I am simply pointing out what a hypocrite that he is and how inconsistent he is.  As mentioned, I don't care as a moderator that he apparently enjoys clicking his little "report abuse" button all day, doesn't bother us, and it is often ignored, I am just providing some facts and pointing out the many inconsistencies in his "forum ettique logic"  and how he feels that he doesn't need to be held to the same standard that he demands from others.

    There is nothing wrong, as long as your own posts execeed the standard you expect from other people.

    I whole-heartedly agree.  There are better ways to deal with people's troll/flame posts. Responding to them with more trollish/flaming behavior gets very tiring after a while.

    Another example:  bstorer reported a post with "do I need to give a reason" because someone insulted MPS:

    Wow. Just wow.

    Ok...

    1) This wasn't even me reporting it... so wtf?

    2) It was a thread started solely for the purpose of a flamewar.

    3) You caused it, because you deleted chebrock's post with no notification and he thought (for whatever reason) it was me.

    You are a fucking idiot, I can't believe you would somehow try and blame that one on me...

    @Jeff S said:

    I am not here to judge MPS. I am here to ask: What are the rules? What are the guidlines in his little world?  How should this all work?

    Again, ask ammoQ or read the threads, I am following the rules everyone agreed to.

    @Jeff S said:

    Why was this reported?  What specific forum rule does this violate?  What is the reasoning and logic behind this?

    So you don't understand how multiple posts with nested quoting is a problem on the forum when they are clearly designed only to troll and annoy forums users?

    Let me ask... What are your rules?

    @Jeff S said:

    That is an offensive, personal threat? But calling people a cunt or retard isn't?  Again, whose standards are we following here?

    Threating personal violence on someone is clearly different than calling someone an idiot.

    Again, if you don't understand the difference, you really need to hand in your mod badge.

     MPS,
    I realize you're suffering from near stroke level OCD regarding what
    and how people post.

    So, why is that post a violation but, if MPS calls him a name, that somehow doesn't break that same rule?  Who gets to judge who is "stupid and deserving" and who is not?

    I reported that post because the thread was the very definition of meta-discussion, which ammoQ had declared a no-no. That chebrock also blamed the wrong person entirely made it even more pointless.

    Um. Where have I been inconsistent again? All you have done is point out that I use the report abuse button.

    Where is it that I said posts should be deleted?

    I agree as well. That is why we agreed with ammoQ when he asked for us to stop and just hit the report abuse button and let him deal with it.

    Notice no one is complaing he deletes their posts? He actually knows how to moderate the correct way.

    Why do you feel the need to point this out?  We already know this!  This is human interaction 101 here!  You can try and change MPS's behavior by setting the example, or maybe even letting him know about your displeasure.  It seems that you even did this some of this.  But what you completely failed at is to give in and delete posts and act childish.  I can personally attest to multiple instances where MPS (and morbius) would initially respond to me in an impish manner, and then after realizing that I don't respond in kind, his own responses towards me matures.

    I hold out hope that the way I personally conduct myself on this forum would serve to influence others and set a level of quality.  Then again, I am a cynical optimist...

    So, I'll try one more time: what actions do you expect the moderators to take when you report all of those posts?  Give me some examples.

    Sometimes it is hard to tell when someone is misinformed or just being a dumbshit.

    So yes, I have been known to alter my opinion or attitude when I realize I was wrong.

    Again, let me make this very clear: I HAVE NEVER DELETED ANY OF CHEBROCK'S POSTS.

    What part of that don't you understand?

    i expect ammoQ to read it and make a judegment on it like he said he would.

    It's adorable how you are dancing around the question and refuse to answer it.

    Again, last time: What actions would you deem acceptable in your little world for moderators to take on the posts you are reporting?  You are the forum ettique master here -- can you elighten us with some examples of how you feel that the moderators should be handling different situations?

    While I can't speak for MPS, I will state what I would like done in such situations, if I was reporting such things.  First, I would take such reports as being a person's opinion and judge for myself.  Feel free to disagree and do nothing!  Then, I would take such reports as a heads-up to make sure the thread doesn't spiral out of control.  I would also, possibly, PM the poster in question to tell them to chill.  I would think that if a moderator would tell a user to chill, then it would carry a lot more weight than if another forum user (especially MPS or morbius) told him to chill.  The other option, in such case as the ridiculous quoting thing, I would have posted a comment asking people to end the over-quoting.  Then again, that requires credibility and recognition around the forum, such that ammoQ has.  I hadn't realized until yesterday that you were a moderator.  Maybe you need a cooler avatar?  :-P
