Moderator Thread: Revisited #2

  • Ok, so Jeff S has locked a thread for dissenting opinions.

    Discuss.

  • I sure hate dissent, so I just ignore it and hope it'll go away if it has no outlet. The last thing I'd want to do is hear it out and possibly reach a compromise.

  • @Welbog said:

Right, kind of like myself and others did with ammoQ?

AmmoQ asked me to lessen my meta discussion in threads, so I did. Significantly. And I started just reporting them as abuse.

Now this clown comes along and starts replying to my abuse reports with "Just ignore the thread resurrections! Simple! Easy!".

    Simply excellent.

  • Motherfucking fuck.  I had a long reply I had composed and it was lost.  Jeff, you are a fucking fascist cunt.

  •  For anyone who actually believes anything Jeff S has said about the 'retard' posts, I will clear the air.

    http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/t/9392.aspx

Morb made a flame there. As you can see it was deleted. Let me assure you, it was warranted though.

Dhromed posted to ask morb to knock it off. This should have been handled in PM, and it DEFINITELY should not have included a reference to morb's sexual preferences or frustrations. In no way would I expect anyone to take his post seriously. VERY unmod-like behavior.

So I replied. I forget exactly what all the posts were, but they consisted of a body of 'Retard' and a tag of "I can do it too!" or something similar.

But you see, Jeff S has been following me around to just about every thread and removing my tags, which as we all know, often give context or meaning to my posts. So by itself, yes the post said 'retard'. And I still don't even feel bad about that.

Dhromed clearly was engaging in 'retarded behavior'.

So that is all, just wanted people to know the truth about the verbal diarrhea our new troll mod is spewing.

  • I guess Jeff S also doesn't like to not have the last word. He is deleting any of our replies to him in this thread now:

    http://forums.thedailywtf.com/forums/p/9503/176058.aspx

Jeff S: I know this is hard for you to understand, but this is mod power abuse. You cannot just delete any post that points out that you are a liar and then declare those people to be liars.

Thank you. But I am not as much worried about my posting, lord knows I have enough posts as is, I am more worried about what this forum would turn into if someone like Jeff S actually meant anything.

I enjoy reading these forums, but the forums do need peer to peer moderation. Anyone who doesn't understand that should not be in any kind of moderator role.

Unfortunately, MPS doesn't defend yours. He constantly "reports" post to moderators for various reasons -- "too stupid" , "troll", "off topic", "not a wtf", and so on.  His reasons are typically random, ill defined, inadequately stated, and usually simply off-base.  He is kind of like the kid who cries wolf at everyone else, but when someone moderates or reports him, he cries about "freedom of speech".  I asked him twice now to explain what i should do about his most recent report of an "in violation" post, and why he feels these posts are in violation of which particular rules of his, and how they differ from his similar posts, and how he feels they should be moderated (deleted, edited, etc) but he refuses to answer.

He reports about 3-4 posts per day, probably about 30-40 in the last few weeks alone. I will admit, though, it is kind of funny.  Occasionally, he is correct -- some of those posts are indeed off topic, or trolls.  And they do indeed get moderated.  So I guess the rule comes down to this: It is OK for MPS to censor the forum and to be the forum police, but not anyone else.  And certainly, by no means, should he ever be policed in any way.  That violates his basic rights, the rights that he alone holds.

So, defend his right to post indeed.  But just beware, because he doesn't care about anyone else's right to post, or the right to have an on-topic conversation, or anything else for that matter.  Yes, he is indeed a true "hero".

(MPS -- if you like, tomorow I can post a summary of all of your "reports" over the last few months, the post contents, and your reasons for reporting. Just let me know. )

Agreed.  I've been frequenting this site a lot longer than most people here and I have seen a significant drop in the quality of posts in the last year.  People can complain about it all they want, but when this site was relatively young there was plenty of argument, dissent and flaming.  People who made stupid, flamebait comments were called on it.  When you refuse to speak out against stupidity it soon becomes the dominant voice and before long the uninformed start to believe what they are told.

I've told this anecdote before, but when I joined the forums I initially hated you because I saw you flaming so many people.  It wasn't so much your style that irritated me, but that I figured you were just someone who liked to throw a wrench in the works.  It took me a bit, but I eventually realized the people you were flaming very frequently had it coming.  They were often making very inaccurate claims and trying to drum up "us versus them" tech wars.   Folks, I've been a very active reader of Slashdot for quite some time now and I watched it slide from a quality site where lots of intelligent debate took place into the shitpile it is now.  I gave up any hope of Slashdot improving several years ago but this site soon filled the void and offered what it was I sought.  I'm slow to join a community but after a few years I eventually felt compelled to create a user account and start contributing because I wanted to be a part of TDWTF.

Sadly, the rot had started overrunning this place just before I joined up and we are now in the middle of a widespread epidemic of stupidity.  I used to come here to be educated by brilliant and original minds that formed the brain trust of my industry.  Today I find the forums mostly useful as a source of unintentional WTFs in the form of terrible, wrong OPs and horribly biased and uneducated replies.  You may not like my style, you may not like what I have to say and you may not even like me.  But I defy any of you to claim that I am biased, closed-minded, uneducated, unintelligent or apathetic.  I care deeply about this site and the community around it and want to make it better.  Many times in the last few months I have felt myself wanting to jump ship, but it was the dedication of some of you -- including MPS -- that kept me motivated.  I realize that the future of this site is not hopeless and that there are many intelligent and interesting contributors lurking in the shadows.  Even with the recent flood of Digg-esque n00bs there have been a few new members who have truly impressed me and made me glad that I have stuck around.

The heavy-handed moderation that Jeff S has engaged in is simpy unacceptable to me.  You don't have to like MPS or myself, but how many of you really feel that we need to be silenced?  I've had many posts deleted by Jeff in the last 2 days and I freely admit that a few of them were just silly goofs that probably should have been deleted.  Perhaps Jeff S will be so kind as to dredge those up so he can show a one-sided picture of my behavior, as he was quick to do with MPS.  However, he has also deleted several posts that were relevent and well thought-out.  He has especially targeted posts by me that level calm, reasonable criticisms against his moderation.  I bristle at the thought of this wannabe fascist demanding imprimatur of the contributors to this site.  For the sake of myself and the rest of you, my sense of decency and respect for dissent are offended that this man thinks he knows what is acceptable for us to say and to read.  I fail to see how targeted, pre-meditated censorship is going to help this community grow.  If you feel the same way, I would appreciate it if you speak up now, assuming Jeff will allow it.  Thank you for your time.

  • What ever happened to the ModerationHistory.aspx page.  I do rather like having some transparency in the moderation, in case disputes arise.  Admittedly, I do find it amusing that MPS would use the "Report Abuse" button a lot (I think I have only used it once my entire time), and yet object when some of his posts are reported/stalked for abuse.  However, given MPS's modus operandi, I would guess that he is purposely abusing the "Report Abuse" button because he has been asked to not flame other people's posts.

Also, whatever happened to the idea of having a sticky post available in the forums of the "agreed-upon" guidelines of the forums?  We did develop some fairly decent things to say, and I keep getting annoyed by the newcomers who don't quote or insert hyperlinks.

(MPS -- if you like, tomorow I can post a summary of all of your "reports" over the last few months, the post contents, and your reasons for reporting. Just let me know. )

He does this because this is what we were specifically told to do by the moderators of this forum.  I personally do not agree that censoring is the way to go, but if my replies are going to be censored then I expect the posts of others to be held to the same standard.  It as at this point that we start to see the flaws inherent in the concept of censorship.  We essentially have a group of moderators who are deciding where the line is and what constitutes "too far".  Before long we end up with people reporting each other and the moderators engaging in hypocritical moderation just to save face.  I have stood against moderation all along, except in the most extreme cases like spam.  Maybe some of you are starting to see why I did so.

Personally, I avoid reporting anything that isn't spam anymore because I realized that going behind people's backs and removing their words from the public record was wrong.  Not just to them, but to the public.  You are unwriting history here, shoving things down the memory hole and removing the need for posters to stand by their words.  You are undermining the ability of rational people to make up their own minds about a particular topic and about the particular character of a contributor.  You are pandering to cowardice and revisionism, trying to reform this community into something you find acceptable.  Quite frankly, I find your behaviour reprehensible and your desire to control the thoughts of other people nauseating.

  • @morbiuswilters said:

I can and will control your thoughts. That clearly is my goal.

I think this is the perfect definition of "Abuse".

Seriously though, you forgot your sarcasm tags...

BTW, I have noticed that for threads that have posts removed from them, the anchor tags don't match up correctly.  Then, when someone links to a post in another thread (or uses "Last Post"), the browser doesn't line up correctly.  Deletions are just a bad idea in general and should be used cautiously.  Then again, so should flaming/trolling...

Indeed it is.  By hiding the opinions of others from me you are manipulating the free exchange of information.  By making my opinion unavailable to others on the forums you are showing them the reality that you want and not the allowing them the freedom to make up their own minds.  There's a reason why our laws prohibit our government from doing what you doing and there's a reason why decent people who respect the free flow of ideas are repulsed by and eventually leave private groups that engage in it.  I enjoy this site, but if your particular brand of censorship is going to be the norm then I confess to not having the stomach to tolerate such wanton abuse of power.  I would guess that others feel this way as well, as I know there are some decent people on this site, present company obviously excluded.

    I am not abusing it.

ammoQ politely asked me to not flame or engage in 'meta discussion' with some members that insist on spamming, trolling, or creating a continued nuisance. He instead asked me to hit the abuse button with a brief description of the problem and let him deal with it.

Apparently that upsets the wannabe mod Jeff S. I cannot help that. I will still go by what ammoQ says as he has been more than fair to us all and has (generally) been very fair in his moderation.

I would also like to point out that while Jeff S like to spew his line of bullshit, if he actually knew his facts, I never demand for user to be 'silenced' or their 'posts deleted'. And that rarely every happened before Jeff S to begin with. But ammoQ has popped in a few times to tell people to knock it off, either in public or by PM. And that kind of moderation I can agree with.

Jeff S knows a very limited portion of one side of the story and is just trying to rally some support for his lame trolling cause.

If anyone really thinks I would sit here and try and censor people to avoid a fight, you can read through my post history. I think it is self evident the manner I prefer.

Noted and appreciated.  I also just want to say that I know I can be abrasive at times, but most of the time it is meant as light prodding and doesn't come from any deep sense of anger or hatred.  If someone wants to be stupid on the Internet, it's no big deal, but I don't want people to start thinking that what is being said is correct.  The people I've often hung around with tend to make liberal use of words like "douchebag", "asshole" and "retard" and they usually mean it in a joking manner or as a light form of correction.  I know this may offend some of you, but they are just words and I'm not trying to come off as petty or spiteful, it's just a matter of my particular vocabulary and manner that has been formed over a long time.

Well, make sure you don't report the abuse. Because if you do, you will end up with Jeff S following you around pretending to be a PI.

Just so that MPS and Morb don't get inflated egos, it should be noted that they are not always right, and have (rarely) spewed erroneous information.  I will admit that when I have personally gone through arguements with MPS and Morb, and while they can be tiring, it is usually very intellectually satisfying.

Also, I agree with Jeff S. in that I don't like seeing a thread get locked because it got out of control.  However, deleting posts without leaving a post indicating something can throw the flow of the conversation off.  But still, something about deleting posts, especially after they have already been commented on, really disturbs me, and goes against my whole philosophy of open discourse and knowledge (even if it is something inane as "retard").

Also agreed.  And to be fair, MPS' "retard" post was meant satirically.  He was criticizing another poster who had essentially called me gay and his tag (which Jeff failed to mention) was "See I can do it too."  He was pointing out that these kind of attacks are lame and pointless.  Seriously, how often do you see MPS or myself call someone stupid or retarded without a full, point-by-point rebuttal of their original statement?  How often can you remember that the person hadn't said something that was stupid?  Perhaps some people find it a bit rude to call someone stupid just because they say something stupid (hey, we all do it at times) but I think if you're so hung up on it you feel the need to complain and delete posts then you have deep psychological issues and forum moderation is not the place for you to work those out.

It's cute -- I am not welcome by the IRC kids!   Sadly, that is indeed all we really have left here in these forums.  By practicing your civil rights and being "men of the people", you've driven pretty much everyone else away.  Kuddos on that -- it must take some work.  Not what I would call respecting the civil rights of others, but we know you are a little selective on which virtues you decide to uphold.

By practicing your civil rights and being "men of the people", you've driven pretty much everyone else away.

What the hell are you talking about? If anything, right now we have the most new people ever. I mean, I wouldn't expect you to know that in the two days you seemed to have started to pay attention again....

Not what I would call respecting the civil rights of others, but we know you are a little selective on which virtues you decide to uphold.

See... this is how I know you are a complete idiot.  (zOMG! I said idiot! Hope you delete my post now!)

You keep mentioning civil rights when no one else has... There are no civil rights on the internet, and least of all on a privately owned forum.

So no, I don't support anyone's 'civil rights' on this forum.

But then again, I am not the one censoring anyone either.

See, that is the thing though, he didn't use sarcasm tags, because he means it.

You know whats funny? I just realized something.  I have suceeded! All you kids are doing the last few days is running around creating tags, flaming me, trolling on about me, talking about me on IRC, making jokes about me, devoting entire threads to me, obsessing about did I delete your post, and so on .... I actually did control your thoughts.   Keep it going!  Let me continue to be the point of your obsession.  Why not? I'll be laughing harder than anyone else!

OK, I can put up with a regular user being a troll/flamer, but I will not stand for a moderator acting this childish.  Jeff S, don't make me have to go back over your posts to see how frequent this behavior is.  I remember when ammoQ discovered that some of us had created a whole religion around him, and he still didn't let it get to his head.

Remember, if enough of us say so, I am sure we can convince Alex (the only god above ammoQ) to revoke your moderator rights.  I am also sure he would take it more seriously if some of MPS's nemesises (nemesisii?) also speak out.

  •  Ever?  You mean, since 2006 when you joined?  Man, you are old school!

post some more topics about me tomorrow

Sure will, everytime you lock one when no one agrees with you or supports your ridiculous ideas. Don't you worry about that.
