Uploading at the speed of light

  • Noticed this when I was uploading a file to rapidshare:

    Image Hosted by ImageShack.us

Didn't know my 6Mbps/768kbps ADSL line could handle such speeds. Obviously a recent upgrade.
O, and btw, no need the guess the file name. It's just my weekly Furry_Tentaclesex_Animalsex_Nakedhorses.zip for a forum I visit.
And the .jpg is not a WTF, I tried PNG8 but it looked horrible.

  • Oh, and sorry for the jpeg artifacts. I didn't notice them until I had posted (yes, I previewed).

The edit time limet had already passed when I had uploaded the new file and edited the post.

  • Weird how it can think its going that fast, but still has 110.4 minutes remaining..

  • TRWTF is that people actually use Crapidshare.

The other WTF's are, in no particular order,

    • Dutch! (J/k, I love Utrecht)
    • Using JPEG for screenshots
    • Caring enough to install AdBlockPro yet downloading a "McAfee SiteAdvisor" extension
    • Windows Vista (just to get this out of the way)
    • Furry_Tentaclesex_Animalsex_Nakedhorses.zip, but I think that goes in line with being Dutch :)

What do you suggest. Not like it's better/worse than other upload services out there... And I don't have a dedicated server waiting for me at my hosting provider...

I already explained the JPEG. I download SiteAdvisor (which only recently became McAfee's) to try it out if it was any good for "less internet-wise users".
About the Furry_Tentaclesex_Animalsex_Nakerdhorses.zip: Animal sex is going to become illegal soon in the Netherland, so I'm getting as much as I can while it still is legal...

Why didn't you try PNG24, which would be the most logical choice?

For images, Imageshack. For anything else, free web page hosts (as opposed to free file hosts) such as Geocities, Google Pages, 100WebSpace etc. Your ISP likely provides some space for a small page. With services like no-ip.org you can host small files and pages on your desktop. Even encoding the file in Base64 and posting it would almost certainly be less of a pain than trying to download from Rapidshit.

If you and the people downloading the file are technically inclined enough to insert/extract it, you could even embed data in an image and host it on Imageshack.

Your last option would be very usefull. If your files are smaller than 4MB....

I'm not sure how much web space you get with free hosting providers, but I don't think it's 100MB x unlimited.

I think everyone will be very happy draining my 768 Kbps upload when you can download with +- 300 KBps from rapidshare.

I don't think my files will fit on the 50MB that my ISP lets me use me. (and further, because of the fierce competition in the Netherlands between ISP's, the service is not available anymore to new customers).

And last but not least, I really think it's a waste of your life to solve a captcha and wait 45 seconds...

  • It should probably be noted that ImageShack is usually incredibly slow (i.e. times out) for those of us outside the US.

WTF? Crapidshare and Megashitload are the worst things ever. Any other sharing method is better. "Any" includes attaching the file to a word document, attaching that to an email, then posting it in a private google/yahoo group.

As for upload services: I find mediafire.com to be the best; fast, not annoying, and zero waiting time.

Websites that ban you randomly and make you wait for an eternity (only to make you wait again) should be cast to the void along with their owners.

    Truth. But...

Will that work for a large file?

The fact is, much of the time there IS no alternative. Files are too big to email, or possibly post to groups. Also too large for free web hosts, and in any case using them for file hosting is a violation of their TOS. If you have a fast connection you could host yourself - but then you're letting all and sundry know your IP address. That's an issue if you're using it to give Anonymous copyrighted porn, which is the main use of crapidshare. Similar problem with making a torrent.

In any case, why should I the uploader necessarily give a damn if people can't download it? I'm offering free shit, you can't get it, too bad.

free.fr, anyone? They have 10 GB, no ads, I believe no traffic limit, and free. Not sure about the individual file size. The problem is to register if you don't speak french, but I did it without much trouble.

And even if not. Then rapidshare still sucks. I mean, there are other, better upload sites (don't remember their names because I don't care too much, but they are there. Or maybe were there =P)

    Mmm...
Of course, this is not the same image, and it has less details, but at least it's bigger.

I guess it's not worth debating much, but JPEG screenshots are one of my pet peeves.

It is a simpler image indeed. Which program do you use? Paint.NET gave an 370 KiB estimation on the image in PNG24...

I usually get around 2,5MB/s from rapidshare.com and 1MB/s from rapidshare.de. Definitely not slow (and last time I used it, rapidshare.de had easily solvable captcha, unlike rapidshare.com which has lately morphed into something intended to prevent you from downloading).

After waiting for over a minute, I get presented with this:

I do believe that classifies it as worse than most others.

  • @billhead said:

Wait, you get cute kitty pics and complain? WTF.

  •  Ugh. Even without sillyness, I'm finding increasingly often that "CAPTCHA's" are illegible to me! Letters that are indistinct, excssive overlapping, questions about whether something is a lette, a number, or junk, and whether case matters...in trying to make them impossible for computers to read, they've made them impossible for humans to read.

The CAPTCHA will die, killed by the increasing cleverness of the programs designed to break it. Because ultimately, anything humans can do, computers will one day do faster. Hopefully the advances will feed back into general OCR software though.

Actually, what's going to kill the CAPTCHA is that a computer has an infinite supply of patience. A computer can keep hammering at a CAPTCHA for hours on end without getting tired, while a human will give up after the second or third try.

And then if you manage to figure it out, often you get a Javascript error in German and have to do it all over again. Megaupload is slightly better; useable, but has popups. Then of course both of them expire the files shortly after their upload or last download, so someone who comes by a month or two later gets (after clicking through some ad pages) a dead link.

As for large files, if you really can't find a better host that accepts them, you can split them into multiple pieces using your favourite archive creator. Though I really would prefer downloading a file at 10kb/s from a torrent or personal HTTP server than not downloading from Crapidshare because my IP is randomly banned or the CAPTCHA is unreadable. I've also heard good things about http://www.evilshare.com/ , but I haven't used it myself.

Really, Crapidshare is clearly designed to be annoying, in hopes that people will buy an account just so they don't have to deal with the bullshit. (Ever look at the source for those download timers? There's no queue or lineup, it just counts down and prints the link. You can bypass it with a Greasemonkey script, or extract the link from the source, and it'll work. Just there to piss you off.)

(But the real WTF is having to enter the line breaks manually in this piece of shit editor.)

  • TRWTF is Google Toolbar.

  • @billhead said:

What makes it worse is that they say "letters", but really should say "characters", since the kitten'd "letters" are occasional in fact digits. Oh, and is that an 'oh' or a 'zero' at the end of the screencap? Hmph.

  • @MarcB said:

I think they at least thought of that, I have always used an "O" instead of "0" and it's worked fine.
