    I must agree with MPS. The fact is they are NOT the same crime.

    Making child pornography is not the same crime as watching. Watching is the same as picking up prostetutes or using drugs, its to destroy the supply by eliminating demand, often because supply is outside of US jursitiction.

     

    Now on that note, by creating permenent mental scars for children as is the case with child pornography those children have a good chance of growing up and becoming the stabbers. So in the end you can argue that the man stabbing another is harming one person, while making child pornography harms many more and often in similar or worse ways.

    How we determine what is appropriate punishment for what crime is not a trivial task (often influenced by political pressure as we see with DMCA, you get a worse punishment for copying a DVD than you would for stabbing someone non-fataly without pre-meditation), and if you want the justification for why what punishment is appropriate : [reference needed].
