So to freshen up things I'm going to ask you something.

What kind of a computer do you own ?

Because I have a sneaky suspicion that it does not fulfill the system requirements for Google Desktop Search.

There has been nothing but the discussion about your application in this forum.

You have been given lots and lots of suggestions on how to improve your program (mainly start a new one from scratch, build a better search engine

and create a user friendlier GUI) ....

Why does Google Desktop Search require 1 GB of disk space and up to additional 4 GB for user index ?

I hate to state the obvious, but lots of people read Slashdot and nobody reads your blog.  Lots of people use Wikipedia but nobody uses SSDS.  I see two possibilities:

    1) The majority of people are right and you are wrong.  You have nothing useful to offer us.  You have nothing interesting to say.

    2) You are right and most people are wrong.  You have something useful to offer, but we just can't see it, despite your repeated attempts to show us the light.

Possibility #2 happens to a few people in history, but face it: at your age if you haven't proved all your critics wrong and gotten the attention of those who would normally ignore you by now, you may as well give it up.  Do something useful with the rest of your life.  Spend some time with your extended family.  Stop spamming slashdot, wikipedia, random message boards, university e-learning sites, etc.

When the end is near, do you really think you'll look back and say: "Gee, I sure wish I had spammed the 1 or 2 remaining Internet forums who have not heard of SSDS?  I sure wish I had posted more videos of rocks on Youtube?  I wish I had spit in the face of more people who were genuinely trying to help me?"

For the same reason that you would be disqualified if you tried to enter an 18-wheeler truck in a boat race.  Is it really so hard for you to understand?  Netsquared is looking for web apps.  SSDS is not a web app.  Therefore, SSDS is disqualified by the same rules that apply to all Netsquared contestants.

    • Win the election
    • Convince one person to use SSDS

THAT DOESN'T EVEN MAKE SENSE YOU RETARD.   Are you capable of rational thought at a level higher than that of a 5-year old?

Listen: NetSquared's contest has rules.  If you break them, they disqualify you.  For example, the most basic rule is that the contest entry HAS TO BE A WEB APP.  If somebody here told them you broke that rule, then it is fair for NetSquared to disqualify you.  If nobody told them, THEY WOULD HAVE FOUND OUT EVENTUALLY.  NetSquared DOESN'T OWE YOU ANYTHING.  They created the contest, they are providing the prize, they get to make the rules.  And the rules apply equally to everyone.  If MasterPlanSoftware were to submit SSDS, he would be disqualified too.

<font color="#ff0000">Y</font><font color="#ff0000">ou only have yourself to blame for ENTERING A CONTEST YOU COULD NOT WIN.</font>  Your complaint that you were unfairly disqualified or you were robbed of the $100,000 prize is as ridiculous as:

    • A vegetarian complaining that "Joe's Steakhouse and Grill" doesn't have any food he likes to eat
    • A high-school dropout complaining that medical school won't accept him
    • A minimum-wage worker complaining that "The Billionaire's Club" rejected him
    • A career criminal complaining that the police academy rejected his application
    • Osama bin Laden complaining that he was passed over for the Nobel Peace Prize, yet again
    • A sterile man complaining that he is not allowed to donate sperm
    • A legless man complaining that he is not eligible for the triathlon
    • A blind, deaf, armless man complaining that he is not allowed to drive a car

Do you see what I'm getting at?  Probably not.

God, you are truly beyond help.  I can't even imagine how you could have ever functioned in the real world (e.g. moving from province to province, working several jobs, avoiding being beaten to death in a bar fight after naming your new drinking buddy "BillSwamp".)

Yeah, I blanked your user talk page and left a warning. Consider it a light problem; I usually delete more-than-obvious spam off the face of the Earth.

You want critique? Okay, I can critique. Come get your free critique from a long-time Wikipedia user! I'm also a wannabe writer, so I hope I can give a little bit of useful literary criticism. Ahem...

If we'd turn your original post into a proper Wikipedia article... my my, what a mess this is. There is 100% lack of reliable sources, no in-line sources at all. Content is thoroughly contaminated by what appears to be original research. Basically, every fact should be attributable to some external source that was published in an edited publication. You can't just dump something off your head on a page and call that an article - this is a very long-standing rule. It's a very handy rule, too, as it keeps out rampant speculation, unverifiable first-hand experiences and many many weird crackpot theories. Most alarmingly, there is nothing to indicate the notability of the subject. If this is a remarkable program, surely it has been reviewed in detail in some reputable publication? If the approach is truly remarkable, have scientists studied it?

The text doesn't focus on the matter at hand: encyclopaedia articles should explain what something is rather than reiterating the epic birth-saga of your beloved application in excruciating detail. People read encyclopaedias to get short, concise explanations of things. How tall Mount Everest was, again? 8,848m - that's in the first sentence of the Mount Everest article. What's in the first few sentences of this article? Some incoherent rambling about flowcharts and text searches. People who start reading that will get hopelessly confused right from the start!

Your article is kind of like your program code with its mess of GOTOs: You've mixed information in various places. Suppose people want to hear about the features: they want a giant big section called "Features". Suppose they want to hear about the history: they want a giant big section called "History". Here, you explain history and features and design decisions in a giant merry mess. That's not good.

You've also brought the Author to the picture; the reader doesn't care about *you*, any more anyone would care about a newspaper reporter when they read news - they care about the *facts* you will present. They don't care that you liked your own desktop search - they want to hear that President of Brutopia is using it daily to gradually reduce the number of slaves needed to retrieve records from the archives, thus improving the human rights situation in the country. As reported by Wired Magazine.

The text is also marred by what I call "explaining the function and purpose of every damn nut and bolt as if they were completely new to the reader" syndrome; if the reader wants to find out about the larger technical/historical/cultural context, there's other articles for that. All you need to do is to describe your desktop search application; the reader knows that in the stone age, people used recipe books (or it's already listed in "Desktop Search, History of".) Speaking of which, the article doesn't integrate at all with other articles.

You may also probably want to read an actual Wikipedia article before trying to write one of your own. This just doesn't resemble your average Wikipedia article in any sense, shape or form.

  • @WWWWolf said:

This is the part that Spectate will never, can never, ever understand.  Spectate is the god-king of his own delusional little world.  I refer you to Exhibit A:

Search is what this program does
Hi Jon to search my inmail.txt file (I have them all back to 1996) at prompt #1 enter "inmail.txt" at prompt #2 enter "C" for full context display or "S" for matching lines display at prompt #3 enter "from:/SpectateSwamp" The "/" is the field seperator and can be changed in the control.txt file up to 6 elements can be listed here. and you are off searching you can display a previous match by entering "p" enter "b" to back up one screen and display again enter "a" to continue complete display from the latest match.

This is probably the best place to replay to search questions for now.

-- Posted by Spectate Swamp on Wednesday, February 07, 2007

Reading that reply, you would be forgiven if you assumed Spectate cannot distinguish between himself and others.  I mean, most people learn how to do this as small children.  Obviously Spectate fell on his head during some crucial stage of development.

    Exhibit B:

    http://spectate-swamp-source.blogspot.com/

    TheDailyWTF like pulling teeth

Spreading the word is like pulling teeth. But it does help bring out all the capabilities of SSDS.

TheDailyWTF.com post is one of the longest ever. Lots of good humor and info. I'll do more video as I have promised there.

Here's the funny part: nowhere in his blog does he actually link to the relevant dailywtf thread, or explain what he was doing there.  In other words, a new visitor to the blog would have no idea what he is talking about.  For most people, this is a problem.  For Spectate, no problem - HE IS THE ONLY ONE WHO ACTUALLY EXISTS, therefore he does not have to explain anything to anyone else.  If it makes sense to him, it's good enough.

If SSDS is good enough for him, it's good enough for everybody.

If the medicine stones are important to him, they must be important to everyone.

If he feels he should win the NetSquared competition, why then, NetSquared should go ahead and write him that check.

Of course, if reality deviates one iota from the idea that the universe revolves around Spectate, there is only one possible explanation: "plants", conspirators, and conspiracies.

It is 10,000 lines of utter spaghetti code, no sane person would ever describe it as simple. The scary thing is the fact the main idea is a brute force, character by character matching algorithm - this is a simple idea, how it gets bloated to 10,000 lines is a miracle.

Oh, and you may be wondering why he uses pseudo-line numbers for his GOTO labels.  Truth is, he was so sad they got rid of line numbers that he reintroduced them.  No joke.

And yes, Neowin closed your topic because you're a complete nutter and they don't want your garbage over there.

Then they will miss the traffic that my next press release will generate. I'll point them all here for the links and discussion. If it doesn't get locked. Maybe some of this will get back to the NetSquared mashup group and they will reinstate the Swamp search. If not they will look bad. Even badder than the naysayers here.

You are not generating any extra traffic, retard. We were all here anyway. There are no ads in the forums, so no one is going to benefit from the extra posts we are throwing at you.

Goddamn. You really are getting stupider.

  • He must think he's doing us a public service. It would be a public service if he silently removed himself and took all his posts with him. He needs his own website to rant.

  • I can position a stone under a steady drop of water and acheive the same affect. Doesn't make it any more magical
