WinMerge - Press any key

  • Overlooking the fact that I'm using Winmerge at all, check out the "Press any key" button. NB: Pressing any key doesn't actually do anything, you need to click the button.

    Winmerge WTF

May not be a WTF - check to see if your keyboard's 'any' key works.

Why is using WinMerge a WTF?

  • It's a worse WTF that you don't know what to expect when you click that button (or actually press any key).

Close? Continue? Pause? Stop? Make funny noise?

  • press any key ... to PARTY! (best said in robot voice).

My computer's "any" key is just to the right of the power button. I'm sure that pressing it will have an effect, but I don't think it's what WinMerge is expecting.

  • You just know that's there because the program was ported from DOS by a programmer without an imagination!

You know, after seeing this thread for the n-th time, it suddenly occured to me what's really going on. The application isn't asking you to press any key at all! I assume that it's a windows frontend that runs a command line based merge in the background, then takes the output, filters it into different categories and shows you this nice summary window. When the program doing the work is done, you need to press any key. The button allows you to do that: When you push it, the any key is sent to the command line application.

Never mind, I'm probably just sleep deprived. :)

  • No trouble with users not finding the Any Key anymore!

     Brillant!
