Zune Marketing

  • I love my Zune. Honestly, I do. But why don't more people use them?

    Marketing like this.

A roving penis meets a bare-assed belching eye monster! Perfect!

Doesn't it just make you feel so musical?

  • Wha...what the fuck did I just watch?

  • I'm glad I read the whole message and noticed the word "penis" before trying to open that link at work...

  • It appears that this is one of a series where young and promising artists have done short films about "sharing". There's a whole site full of them at www.zunearts.com if you feel particularly... I don't know, stoned? That's the only excuse I can fathom.

I watched another one where two giant monsters were "sharing" buses full of people, whom the monsters were happily shaking into their mouths as a snack. I don't know. Maybe the Zune marketing team has finally instituted that eight drink minimum they were considering.

    That is definitely NSFW dude.

You go to work? Man. Sucks to be you.

  • I don't know if it's necessarily NSFW...I mean, it is just a Microsoft Zune commercial.  I'm still trying to wrap my mind around wtf it's trying to convey, though.  I get the sharing thing...but...why the penis "metaphore?"  Maybe it's something about owning a Zune will let you pick up girls?  Or, at least, get an extra eyeball from naked female multi-clopses.

I mean, if someone looked over your shoulder and saw you'd watching that, I think their response would go like this:

"Hey, you're watching porn in the offi...wait...penis monster...eyeballs...HEAD ASPLODE

  • It was obviously a marketing misfire - I seriously doubt it's supposed to be a penis.

  •  The thing is, Zune means penis in  french-speaking parts of the world. How is this different to say, Apple using fruit in an advert, or Sony using rapists?

  • @Outlaw Programmer said:

RIAA sponsored subtext: sharing files is like sharing STDs, you might catch a virus thorugh sharing if you're not careful, even though the experience is joyful.

  • That was completely fucked up! I don't see how something like that would help sell Zunes -- except to a fringe market that would think Hell yeah! They are fucked up! Rock on!. The video even focused on the eye monster's ass while it was straining to pop an eyeball. W...T...F...

  •

Really explains the video, don't it?

Also, "marketing misfire" is one of the better euphemisms I've seen in a while.

  • @Morbii said:

I don't know, from my perspective it is working perfectly in the sense that it gets the word of Zune out, on the other hand who here actually wants a Zune? Personally I'm quite content with my GP2X/PSP (mp3/wma only :/ ), when a better ogg/vorpis player comes out within my price range I will buy that.

  • @Lingerance said:

on the other hand who here actually wants a Zune?

I don't so much want the Zune as I want the ZunePass subscription, which lets me download all the music I want for $15 a month... but I can only play it on a Zune or a Windows PC. Small price to pay, IMO, but then I honestly don't get the whole DRM protest. Sure, DRM is stupid; who cares? It doesn't really stop you from doing anything.

    Exactly

What I personally find ironic is that the mechanism Tunebite uses is historically referred to in the industry as "the analog loophole".

So, in a very real sense, it's digital analog.

Perhaps "misfire" was the wrong word, particularly if the ad is working.  By misfire, I meant that I don't think the marketing team meant it to be a penis, but it looks quite like one.

Not really. It's just a deal we made. I get to download all the music I want if I agree to these terms, and the DRM is there to get in my way should I decide to violate them.

But since DRM is readily broken in all kinds of ways, I obey the terms of the license because I have chosen to do so, not because anything is actively forcing me to comply. Should I choose otherwise, the DRM will represent no more than a minor nuisance, so it doesn't actually stop me - indeed, only I stop me, because I'm honest and want to obey the terms of my license.

There's nothing wrong with DRM as long as you know about it. My Wii games are only playable on my Wii which is a pretty huge drawback, but I'm okay with that.

I had no problems deciphering that except "w2ty". No matter how I pronounce "2" in there, it just doesn't come out right.

As far as Microsoft hardware goes: I only buy used or refurbished. I miss Sega in the console arena. For MP3s, we have a SanDisk Sansa. I'm not sure which one I want to get for higher capacity and video playback (I'm not too concerned about the latter functionality, though).

hmm ... I just put them all in my head.  Then I can hear them in my head whenever I like.  Harder to share with others, as I can't play guitar or sing like the guy from The Darkness

  • @belgariontheking said:

I see. Most people don't use a number in the middle of other letters unless they mean for it to be pronounced out as a complete word, such as the "w8" above or the "l8r" that others use. Go figure.

Doesn't work as well for blocking out external sounds, such as when the former-bouncer-turned-SysOps-Tech guy hovers in front of my office on his cellphone -- which he does frequently. Obviously here at work I use earbuds with MP3s on my computer, but the same concept applies at doctors' offices and such.

Ouch! For the price, they better be. I don't have that type of cash to spare at the moment. Too many things keep popping up. For example, I'm taking my wife to get her wisdom teeth removed tomorrow.

Well worth the price. It is like the rest of the world disappears into a magical place where wonderful sounding music is playing. If you like intensive video games on the computer they are great for that as well. Especially if your SO doesn't like to hear to said games.

You could save the money on the wisdom teeth, just buy the headphones and you wont be able to hear her whine about them anymore.

You might to check with a lawyer to establish the legality of this strategy in your jurisdiction, but have you considered simply punching her in the jaw?

Any good wife should be able to take a punch... as well as return it. Therefore this might be detrimental to your own health.

Sounds great. I do play games that issue audio cues, such as the approach of an enemy, and it's usually hard to catch them because she's babbling in the background or playing music.

LOL! That would be ok except that she becomes incapacitated when it gets bad, so nothing gets done around the house -- especially dinner.

It would be quite hard to knock out the teeth when they are subdermal.

Exactly. Perfect for that. You will do better and be way more 'into' the game. I promise. And you will notice all sorts of things in your music you probably never noticed before.

  • Ah, Zune.

The only MP3 player that is worth getting without buying in to the whole Apple thing. Creative are useless in their product development, and Zune seems a really cool product, partiuclarly when combined with Windows Media Centre and XBox 360.

But can we get it in the UK? Can we bollocks. We must be a real inferior market. Sod the Marketplace, I just want the MP3 player. Hello, anyone there at MS?

Well... I can plug my creative zen vision:m into an xbox since it supports mtp...

Though I must agree with you about creative and software. I wish they had 32 bit linux drivers for XFI sound card. And I wish their video converter would find installed video/audio codecs in 64 bit windows. But thats just wishful thinking.

BTW I love this design flaw, when my Zen Micro broke, I opened it up. The connection to the headphones was such thin sodlering that after normal wear-and-tear of plugging/unplugging headphones, the sodlering would shatter like glass (under a microscope you can see it), though the rest of the hardware was actually pretty good. After fixing the sodlering, it worked like new and still does(3 yrs now).

Actually, on Slashdot we don't tolerate that sort of shit either. FUD, yes. "Caz", no. If we had a "-1 Stupid" mod we'd use it for that type of crap. dlikhten, spell check your fucking posts!

By the way, I own a first generation Xbox 360. Working fine. I use Vista. Also working fine. I have a Windows Mobile phone. Also working fine. Take that crap back to Slashdot or Digg (digg actually tolerates crappy spelling and vocabulary like yours actually, so go there).
