Greece Travel Recommendations?

  • Way off topic here, but that's what's General Discussion is for, eh?

Has anyone traveled to Greece on vacation? I'm planning a 2-week vacation w/ the wife... but I'm not so big a fan of the SEO'd webpage mess that comes up on a google search for greece vacation. Any recommendations/suggestions from other Greece/world travelers?

  • I've been to Greece three times, always on Islands, never on the mainland.

Kos is nice, I've been there a few years ago. It's also very close to the Turkish city of Bodrum, so you can make a little daytrip to yet another continent.

Santorini is extremely beautiful, but rather small and the beaches consist of little black vulcanic pellets instead of the white sand most tourists want.

I didn't enjoy Crete very much, but maybe it was just bad luck and I was on the wrong spot of this large island.

  • I have never been outside North America, but I do have one suggestion: Learn to speak, read, write, understand Greek.

I thought all the Greek you need to get by is "Ouzo!" and "Zorba!"

  •  From my experience, a lot of the greek islands are tourist-traps with hordes of 14-to-18-year-old kids. You need to look a bit further to find anything special. I've been to Zakynthos and Crete, and Zakynthos is just full of british kids. Crete is a big island, so you can find nice spots there, as long as you avoid the mainstream places. Kos is notorious for being full of scandinavian kids, along with Samos. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend anything great in Greece, but If you would like to see some beautiful nature and relatively untouched culture, I can recommend visiting Slovenia or Croatia. I also heard that Finland has some great Salmiak :D
