Experienced programmer wanted
-
We've recently had a new addition to our software development staff. A programmer with "extensive" experience who has somehow managed to include a WTF in every single thing he's written for us. Of course having "extensive" experience means he has an opinion on everything. Only recently I was debating on how black font text doesn't look good in a textbox with a blue background. His final words were "I do not agree". What do you say after that?
I have been subjected to a soul-withering amount of undergrad quality code a lot of which will probably be ending up here.
The latest gem is this:
$page = empty($_GET['page'])? 'mindex' : $_GET['page'] ;
include($page . '.html');These are two lines of a grand total of five of an index.php file in the web root dir.
This is now live on a ministry website.

Oh great, which site? :D

"We are instituting a new company uniform policy"

One of those probably:
http://www.google.com/search?q=inurl:/mindex.html
Other thing is - why do so many people use mindex? What's wrong with good old index.html?

'Extensive Experience' and PHP are the real WTF.
Real experienced programmers move onto greener pastures than PHP.

I should point out that the 'Extensive Experience' is not actually on PHP. Or any other part of the LAMP architecture we tend to use. But of course that doesn't stop him from having an opinion on everything.

Doesn't iTunes have black text on a blue background? Looks pretty darn good if used correctly.

I suppose it depends on the shade of blue.

I had a developer who would take the designs from the designers and drop all the colors to his own choice of a "natural" scheme. Horrid browns, pinks, greens and oranges for all his sites. He constantly refused to stick to the design colors which meant the rest of us had to spend extra time reworking them. He said the colors were better for those with vision impairments which whilst probably true meant the rest of us had to look at true monstrosities. He never heard of using alternative CSS styles.

Or probably not.
But the ones which go to mindex probably don't specify it, since it's the default.

Indeed. Try this: http://www.google.com/search?q=inurl:/index.php?page=
