Happy Winter Solstice WTF

  • Supposedly this was the longest night of the year? I noticed my cheapo wall calendar has gotten dumber than it usually was, showing the length of the day as 6:43 yesterday, 6:44 today and 6:43 again tomorrow. (The cause apparently being that the sunrise and sunset are rounded before taking their difference.)

  • Still, odd. I think the 22nd really is the shortest day though, at least for me here in CET.

(And I should not have to resort to equation solvers in astronomy software to tell me this, just give me a timestamp for the event and I can figure out the longest/shortest night/day stuff myself. Calendar makers, are you listening?)

  • D'oh!

I've never seen a calendar with day lengths on it. A lot with moon phases on for some odd reason, though. Perhaps I should double check them some time.

Anyway I remember the time (2-3 years ago) that our office supplies supplier (that sounds odd) gave us the free calendars with more mistakes than you would ever believe. 3 months had the wrong number of days, 4(!) months began on a day other than the day after the last month ended on, and their company name was spelled wrong.

  • Hmmm, over here in Oz it was the shortest night of the year. Somebody really screwed up big, I mean how could you miss it?

    Bon Mot.

Now that clearly proves that the Earth is banana-shaped.

Blasphemy! Any fool can see that it is shaped like a spork.

Nonsense. The earth is round. Like a pancake.

Dude, pancakes are rolled into a tube, they aren't round.

Ah, but that means the earth is actually hand-shaped or fork-shaped.

Rolling pancakes into a tube with the use of a fork? That requires mad skillz. I'd rather stick with the banana.

And we can clearly see that this quote-pyramid is shaped like a pancake as well.  A pancake that has been cut into a pyramid.

    Such keen observationz!

And for the record, a fork-shaped pancake is not hard to produce. Stick a sidemost tine into the pancake at & perpendicular with, the edge, and begin fork torque. I'd like to see you try that with a banana.
