Recursive UI (Russian Dolls UI Design?)

  • I was using a program called MP Navigator on MacOS. It's a tool that comes with Canon multi-function printer, fax, scanner, toaster, washing machines. When you bring up the user interface, it looks like this:

    Recursive Interface

It's recursive. There's a picture of the screen in the UI. Inside that picture is another picture. Inside that picture is another picture. I wonder why they thought that was the right way to do this.

The designer wanted to put something there, but already had the product image below the options, and thought the droste effect was cool.

  • If you look closely (or zoom in) you will see that the fourth one contains a grey rectangle, instead of another copy.

  • Would be better if the recursive image was a live screenshot, with your mouse moving around appropriately and everything.

Just VNC to a computer, then VNC back to your desktop.  That'll do it in a hurry (like we all haven't tried that the first chance we got? :D)

I've never tried that, but I do remember using some screen zoom utility that came with my video card to zoom in on itself.

How many screens will it display before running out of memory? Or is that not a problem?

  • There will likely be a one-frame or more delay on it, so it's only rendering one frame and using the cached copy of the previous frame to fill in the vnc window (and the frame before that as part of that image ad-infinitum).

  • What is the point of the picture, exactly? It seems to have no purpose :P

And then try to move the mouse properly :D

  • Now all they need is a cat looking at the UI looking at another cat looking at the UI looking at another cat looking at the UI looking at another cat........
