Google Referrals WTF

  • I have SiteMinder on my blog and it shows where my traffic is coming from.  What is cool is that it shows me the Google search terms that people use to find my blog.  Here I found someone from Florida searching for "picture of dog licking his balls":

This in turn returns a Goggle results page like this:

WTF? Why does my blog show up as the number 3 page on the keywords "picture of dog licking his balls"?  What is that kind of placement worth?

And then, there is the guy from France searching for "hacking porn" and my blog is number 4!  Now we're talking some AdSense revenues!

  • Your site matches that combination of keywords better than all other sites on the web. What do you honestly expect?

Maybe if you tried cussing less and actually writing intelligent things?

  • @Pap said:

Agreed.  In my experience, Google's search results are quite accurate.  Chances are good that search string accurately describes your site.  Try using it to your advantage, and tap into the "dog licking his balls" market.  I'm sure it's lucrative-- my dog does it all the time.

  • @TunnelRat said:

    ...dude.

    it's a metaphor.

google ignores unimportant syntax words; I think it pulled up the result because it was relevant for 'picture a dog licking his balls', which is, of course, the Jeopardy answer to which the correct question is "What is TunnelRat's blog?" I'll take self-indulgent masturbatory jerk-offs for 800 Alex.

Seriously, you're questioning this?  Do you READ your site when you post it, or do you just kind of pass out at your keyboard and let the chips fall where they may?

Haha, yeah he totally missed the irony, please Misguided, let me spell it out for you.  It's tragic irony because the whole forum (audience) knows that we've seen this WTF twice before from TunnelRat, but TR (ironic character) still is surprised when everyone responds the exact same way.

This is so awesome!  It's like Shakespeare in my living room.

Again, seriously, dude.  TRWTF is that you expect us to think you're doing anything different than the whining you've done in all your other posts.

Misguided is not irony challenged.  You just don't know how to craft irony.  Besides, he was taking something that was funny (your whining) and making it funnier.

  • Google does some wierd things occasionally.

For some weird reason, people were getting to my site, searching for "nissan", or weirder "incest". This was at a time when my site was a blog with 2 posts on it, talking about the issues I had setting up the blog.

I can't think of anything that would lead to those queries getting to my site. Even if I was to talk about sex or cars on the blog, I doubt I'd mention incest, or even worse, Nissans.

  • What funnier is that some typed 'picture of' rather than using google's image search.

  • @TunnelRat said:

And then, there is the guy who spends his time re-running the fucked-up search queries that brought people to his blog and posting the rankings to a forum.

I know it's been said, but The RealWTF is TunnelRat.

  • Yeah, but what's even funnier is that my irony-challenged mother-in-law, who normally has difficulty using a cell-phone, has gone to trouble of creating 2 online personalities to do nothing but flame my WTF posts!

WTF, Grandma?  That is so cool of you to pose as a narscistic over-pierced college dropout and a finger wagging progressing prig so that you can hound me in the blogosphere!

Yeah really, what is with this moron constantly calling anyone who doesn't agree with him 'irony challenged'. From what I have seen TunnelRat is the only one here that doesn't understand the word 'Irony'.

But hey, if you have to troll popular sites to get people to visit your blog, maybe intelligence is outside of your grasp.

Wow... Please tell me English is your second language?

...And that you are REALLY drunk.

  • If you have a blog that's fairly random in what you post, bizarre search engine terms are par for the course. For example, here's a random selection of search phrases which people have come to my site from:

    • tomorrow morning exam at at
    • are badgers colour blind
    • if english was good enough for jesus it s good enough for them mexicans.
    • interesting mr bond
    • my car caught fire am i covered on my car insurance uk

I would like to point out that my website is just a personal blog, i.e. has nothing to do with naked women or badgers. Particularly badgers

Yes, English is my second language -- you can find out why here.  Good catch on my typo!  And no, I'm not drunk -- it's not even 8 AM yet.

And please tell me you're going to someday post a WTF (not just reply to one) that gets one, and I mean at least one, response.  I mean Another three state boolean - MSDN was a howler, and Website of our 'trapper' friend , was, um, peculiar, but nobody cared. They got no responses. Zero, Nada.

So in the grand scheme of things, what's better for this site?

    a. someone who posts WTFs that get a ton of replies and pages views, thereby driving up traffic and ad revenues, and that someone also links to this site from his blog, thereby driving more traffic to this site,

    or

    b. someone who posts boring WTFs that nobody cares about?

I'll let the readers decide.  Now maybe you and my irony-challenged mother-in-law, who has created not one, but two online personalities to flame my WTFs, can get together and craft a WTF that people will actually read

It could be quite the opposite.  Maybe google is trying to help the naked-badger-woman fetish people out there by redirecting their searches to a more constructive blog.  In that case it should be a compliment that google is referring these poor, sad people to you for help and guidance.

Umm... that was me.  Quick search of the forums on that exact text will show my post.

I'm right.  Your mother-in-law (shudders at the thought that tunnelrat could be married) is right too.  We don't need any of that attitude around here, mister.  I, like many others on this forum, am not your mother-in-law.

In other news, the mother-in-law joke was kinda funny.  This post would not be as flamed if it were constructed as a joke and not as a whine.

  • No, no, the attitude is good. He is getting pagehits for TDWTF!

Obviously TDWTF needed some... We just didn't know it...

When was the last time YOU posted incoherent mumbling, whining, blatant homophobia and racism and got a bunch of flaming responses??

When was the last time YOU made yourself look like an idiot on the internet??

  • @MasterPlanSoftware said:

Like I said before, I dismiss the homophobe charge, I just have an issue with all those gays in the fashion industry getting to pick the models. And just because I recently blogged about a boss who collected boy toys to work for him doesn't mean I'm a homophobe.

Now, take it easy with the finger-waggging, it could lead to carpal-tunnel syndrome.

Hunh.  Dude, in light of this new information, I'm gonna sodomize you at practice tonight.  Apparently it will neither mean we're gay nor constitute cheating on your gf, because I'm told we're the same person.  More importantly, TunnelRat can then blog about it and have some gay sex content to explain his high-LARIOUS google search rankings.

In all seriousness, the overwhelming majority of users on this site seem to think that TunnelRat is a total tool, and yet he keeps coming here expecting us to embrace how clearly fucking awesome he is...  Surely even someone as absurdly deluded as he is realizes by now that it's not going to happen...  This is the absolute definition of trolling.

No, no, he is doing us a service by adding revenue to TDWTF, with page hits!

Obviously TDWTF was hurting for traffic... Especially the gay bashing, racist, trolling kind.

I notice he keeps quoting the waste of space that got tased (is that a word?)... Maybe because he is just like him. Doesn't know that he isn't revolutionary and interesting, but instead just plain stupid and annoying.

I think the way he talks, treats people, and posts stories about all the times he has been fired is more indicative of his lack of employment. I really have no doubt he is an unemployable mess. Funny thing is that he keeps insisting on telling us about it. Like he is proud of it.

It wouldn't surprise me, because in this crowd, if a man has never had sex with a homosexual member of some minority, he must be a racist homophobe.

But seriously, what is with all those fashion models that look like 12-yr old boys?

    ;-)

I actually heard (I think it was on the xkcd forums) that the reason is that the designers (straight, gay, or otherwise) would prefer a model who is not attractive (i.e. does not attract attention) at all, but rather functions as a mobile clothes-rack. If you're looking at the model's body, you're not looking at what she is wearing.
