Lol, they saved it as unicode which regedit doesn't support :P

Yeah, its on a network drive that is mounted on every login.

regedit in Windows XP exports registry patches in Unicode. This patch just happens to be garbled (no linebreaks, two garbage characters at the beginning).

Well they're not garbage characters, they're 0xff 0xfe... the unicode points 0xfffe and 0xfeff are usually put at the begining of UTF-16 files for easy detection of endianess.
Also, since something hasn't read this as unicode it's possible there are in fact linebreaks encoded as UTF-16, which would be (NUL) CR NUL LF (NUL), and since this is windows it might only do a line break on "CR LF". I'm also guessing it's interpreting NUL as space for some reason....

Well it does that in Notepad (the older one that doesn't support unicode), shows the UTF16 characters at the beginning and shows spaces for NUL. So for some reason the .reg file is in unicode but the regedit version doesn't seem to support it (older windows?)

Interestingly if you save the defrag analysis log of the windows disk defragmenter, the resulting file is garbled exactly like that..
