Why Do Whole Foods’ Shelves Always Seem Empty?
Staffers say a “militaristic” stocking system — put in place just before Amazon’s purchase — causes headaches for customers and employees.
The new setup supposedly caps inventory at “enough product to keep the shelf full and no extra,” which employees say in some cases amounts to 25 percent of what they used to get. They say seafood and meat are sometimes now stored in the same freezer, and that their stores are “constantly running out of products in every department,” enough that “entire aisles are empty at times.”

Well, at least they can order it with Amazon Now or whatever it's called and get it only a few hours later.

That would probably work if they were getting deliveries 3+ times a week. Otherwise, it's just plain stupid.

Have they learned nothing from JIT inventory that has been basically perfected over the past 40 years? They have 37 years of historical information and trends in order to build their inventory strategy off of. They should not be doing shit like this. JIT inventory is not even that difficult. How long is your stocking interval and what is the maximum you sell in that time period? That is how much you keep on stock. If your stocking interval is 3 days and you sell 27 widgets maximum in that time period then you make sure that after stocking you have ~30 widgets.
This shit is not hard. How can they fuck it up this much? Not only that but they fuck it up consistently enough that it becomes a news story. I mean sure, every once in a while a store will have a bust in stocking on an item or two or ten. But not an aisle or two. Not a department.

Were they in trouble before Amazon bought them? Almost sounds like a severe cashflow restriction causing purchases to be the absolute bare minimum because there's no budget for keeping stuff stored for more than a few days.
That or some backfiring attempt to increase demand by restricting supply

Marketing and branding won't be of any use if people literally can't buy your products.
