@blakeyrat I did for ordinary maintenance, and for a few bad problems. (3 serious transmission issues in 2 years! It's enough to make me seriously consider having my next car be a Tesla--such problems are impossible because they don't even have a transmission!) My previous job was the largest employer in a very small town, and the local Ford dealership worked hard to cultivate a good working relationship with us, so it worked out pretty well for everyone involved.

@masonwheeler Mine's a hybrid with the CVT (continuously-variable transmission), they seem to be a lot more reliable than a traditional transmission. Everything else in the car (power steering, power brakes, even the emergency brake) is electric, so they've been 100% trouble-free.
Anyway, point is a hybrid by necessity has a CVT and by necessity has electric almost-everything, so that should solve your problem as well as a Tesla would.

A Tesla doesn't even have a CVT, no transmission at all.
Also, an hybrid still got a combustion engine, so you will eventually need a tune-up, oil changes, etc.
Also, you have a starter, ignition system, cooling system and probably other parts that you don't have in an electric car. While an hybrid is a nice technology, it certainly ain't the same as an electric car.

Yes; did I say otherwise? Thanks for "correcting" my already-correct post, I guess.

What you said:

So, no, it would not.
-
@timebandit The problem was "low reliability".

Yes they do.

No it doesn't.

Yes they do.
My impression was that all of the latest models do not and they just have a single gear (thus no need for a transmission). But I don't know that much about cars, so who knows.

This is a bit more of redefining words to mean whatever people want them to. They have a single ratio gearbox before the differential. That is their transmission. The only vehicles that do not have transmissions are those that are hub-driven with no gear reduction.

Good to know. I think most people understand transmission as a synonym for "gear shifter".

@blakeyrat No idea. The dealership said it was still covered under warranty, I think. (The car was 4 years old the second time.)
Sounds like you paid for that up front then. When did you buy (I bought mine in January 2014)? I would be less than shocked if they changed to include the price up front because no one was paying for the updates.

Early (Jan/Feb, don't remember which) 2013.

Yeah. That's what it means most times. But in basic terms it is just a mechanism for transmitting power. In industry it can mean basically anything that change the speed of a shaft or changes its direction.
Look up "worm drive transmission". It is a type of single-speed deep reduction gearboxes that changes the transmission of power 90 degrees to input. Substantially similar to the Tesla gearbox/transmission.
One thing @masonwheeler is correct about though is that it should be more reliable than a multi-ratio transmission. For most car transmissions it is the clutches that fail. Second would be however they are deriving the multiple ratios (planetary gears, involute gears, etc) and the control of those mechanisms failing. A single-ratio transmission behind a DC motor has none of those. It is KISS taken to the extreme.
