Can’t install to ‘(null)’

  • I thought I’d start the new year by rebooting my computer, and taking the opportunity to install the latest OS version. After choosing the disk to install to, I get this screen:

    0_1514835801434_(null).png

The smaller text below the picture says “macOS High Sierra cannot be installed to ‘(null)’” yet the progress bar seems to indicate that it is installing (of course, the time indicated went up soon after taking the screenshot), and no, my drive’s name is not “(null)” — though it may be fun to rename it to that after.

@gurth maybe it just wants to tell you that it can’t be installed to (null), like you know, as a rule. But since you’re installing it to another drive, it’s all good.

But don’t forget to check /dev/null for new OS after it’s installed, it could be there!

  • @kt_ It looks like it is installing to /dev/null — I started this upgrade last night, and twelve hours later it’s still not finished. That you can’t trust the indicated time, sure, but taking a whole night is rather extreme.

Edit: a reboot helped, it finished the install in about five more minutes … Going to check /dev/null soon to make sure it’s not there after all.

  • @gurth
To be honest ... I never had that issue on undefined ... 😬 undefined 🔥 undefined 🥂

(really? It took 14 hours and 4 posts before at least one remark about the OPs OS choice?)

Apparently that's some sort of change to the filesystem. The code to do that part appears to be not the best part of the upgrade system.

Neither have I on previous undefined system upgrades over the past 13 years or so. Apparently it’s something that happens sometimes, for no determinable reason — a thread about it on Apple’s own forums recommended just shutting down the computer and rebooting, which I was hesitant to do at first.

To the best of my knowledge, SSDs get converted to APFS when you install macOS 10.13, but HDDs don’t. My computer doesn’t have an SSD, and indeed, when I check in Disk Utility it says it’s formatted as “Mac OS Extended (journaled),” AKA HFS+.

Be careful, you might find my porn there. That’s where I always store it.

You store your porn on other peephole's partitions? Why didn't I think of that?

I store it in /dev/null and he’s looking into /dev/null, so my porn should be there. Under the couch. Behind the fridge. And in the air vents.

To be sure it isn't indexed by your photos app?
