Germany now has zero working submarines
-
During a test dive in October, the Deutsche Marine's U-35 struck something (probably a rock) with one of its rudders. The damage required the submarine to be towed back to a shipyard in Kiel for repairs where it joined three other German navy submarines currently drydocked. The U-35 was the Deutsche Marine's only working submarine prior to the collision.
Germany has a total of six submarines, all of the Type 212 class. They are among the quietest, most advanced non-nuclear submarines in the world. Because of accidents and a shortage of spare parts caused by budget cuts, none of the subs are operational.

a shortage of spare parts
You'd think someone would've come up with the idea "Hey, we have 6 useless subs...scrap one and part it out into the others so we can at least have 4-5 WORKING ones..."
-
@el_heffe Things were a lot better when they had hundreds.

Better for Germany.
The rest of the world, not so much.
-
I mean, the German Navy only has these subs in the first place so they can visit the rest of the German Navy.
-
@e4tmyl33t
If they like they could also retrieve some of their old junk ...

What should they do if the same bits break on each one?

Well at the moment I assume they are all very, very quiet. In fact, so quiet that no one will ever detect one at sea. So... works as designed?
-
@gurth Stop letting the same guy pilot them and run them aground in the same spot :D
-
@e4tmyl33t They're Germans, so nothing if not logical and methodical. So they had to repeat the experiment to check if it really was the guy's fault.
Although you would think that after the 3rd or 4th try, the conclusion would start to... sink in.

Do any countries other than the US even try to have a Navy anymore? It seems like no.
Even the UK, who used to be so proud of their Navy back when they used it mainly to lob shells at dark-skinned people, have barely any functioning ships anymore.
Their shiny new carrier leaks at a rate that'll sink it before it even reaches the enemy nation: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-42406138
-
@remi Plot twist: this is a distraction manoeuvre, they actually have hundreds in the sea, all completely silent and invisible.

ISTR hearing that China's making a valiant effort...
-
@masonwheeler They bought a shitty used carrier the Russians haven't finished, and I'm pretty sure they don't even have any jets to put on it yet. (Whatever happened with that J10 they showed off a couple years ago? EDIT: I guess they have 24 ready for naval service, that's like half a carrier's worth I guess.)

They should still be able to make it to France, the Channel isn't that wide.

Wow British planes have short range.
-
@blakeyrat Yeah they just drop and glide from the cliffs of Dover.
-
@remi Hang glide into combat!!!
Oh wait, didn't I see that in a movie once...

200L/hour sounded like a crazy stream of water at first, then I did the math and it's actually about half the average kitchen faucet. I really hope a £3.1bn ship can handle that.
-
@anonymous234 Less than a bucket per minute. You could keep a rowboat floating with that kind of leak.
-
@anonymous234 Yeah but I still want to make fun of the British.

Shoot the engineer who designed that bit, and have someone else redesign it so it won't keep breaking down prematurely.

What's the point if you're already spending a trillion/year on military spending? I think we're pretty safe from whatever WW3 happens to be, unless you guys go rogue, or aliens.
I think at this point you're preparing to defend our planet against aliens, because there isn't any possible threat that would explain all that bombs and shit.
-
@sockpuppet7 The real shitter is when there is a third world war, we'll be entirely unprepared for it. Most of the equipment and training in use right now will be mostly useless, just like virtually all the aircraft purchased from 1935 - 1938 proved mostly useless in WWII despite its price tag and ended up either junked or used solely for training.
-
@sockpuppet7 Well, we are the ones with Area 51. Maybe the researchers there know something we don't!

This is normal for armies the world over. They prepare for the last war, not the next one.
-
@dkf Or in the case of France in 1870, the one a hundred years earlier, before their own military leader changed things.
-
@dkf What on earth could possibly be a threat to the US army?
After the communists and muslims, my bet is that their next enemies will have beards too. What's their problem with beards?
-

The US Government (in a wide sense).

China and North Korea are generally seen as the biggest potential threats. There's also always Iran. So one out of three have beards?
-
@boomzilla That's probably why you didn't attack them.
