NodeBB inherits a Discourse brainworm, and also creates an irritating bug
-
(Apologies in advance, I don't know if this is caused by some custom plugin, or a setting on our site.)
Problem:
NodeBB prevents you from posting a reply to a thread that consists solely of an image.
Result:
You receive the following error: "Please enter a longer post. Posts should contain at least 2 character(s)."
Second Problem:
After receiving the error, when you go to edit your post, the editor pane is now read only. To continue, you must discard the post, and then start from scratch.

In my opinion, this was a really irritating mis-feature of Discourse. I resorted to adding html comments to each of my posts along the lines of "<!--β post not empty, fuck you Jeff! -->".
Replying to a post with an image is widely accepted practice online, and disallowing this for "idealistic raisins" is just trying to deny how people actually use forums on the internet. Valid scenarios are replying to specialised threads (such as the funny stuff thread), or replying with a meme or image that contains text.
Jeff specifically wanted to disallow this behaviour in Discourse because he wanted to force people to behave the same way he does. Is that really the example we want to follow?

@doctorjones Well, you can emulate the same fix. Simply put this after your post:
[|]: <> (Fuck you, NodeBB.)

@luhmann it's not as funny without @Lorne-Kates here

Does it work if you use Markdown syntax?

Apparently you can't put text between <img> tags.

yes you can

@ben_lubar
test text

</img>
That doesn't exist in HTML.
-
@ben_lubar Really? Could have sworn it did.
Oh well, I don't actually know HTML anyway. Wish there was a way to specify size in the Markdown syntax, so I didn't have to keep using the HTML one.

Except he didn't. I distinctly remember that Jeff didn't actually use forums before he wrote his "civilized" forum to force people to behave the way he would if he actually used forums.

Ironically, when he was admin on our forum, he frequently posted meme images as replies to stuff.
So either he's the world's hugest hypocrite, or it's just an asshole. Or both.

A reply containing a meme image is not the same as a post without text with only an image. That's not how a proper conversation works, sorry @r10pez10

Failed impersonation. Jeff has never apologised in his life
-
@jaloopa False!
-
@pie_flavor That must have been by accident.
-
@jbert His phone was hacked
-
@hungrier His assistant left his phone in a locker room and someone else used it
-
That's a weird typo for "it's all because you're using chrome on android, buy an iPhone"
-
@pie_flavor It was just his lawyer.

That's just the exception that proves the rule
