How did you get your current and previous jobs? I've followed two main methods, Dice and a listing that the county puts out of the largest employers. But I've recently started wondering if I'm missing a lot of possibilities by relying on Dice. Monster has a lot of jobs, but their functionality doesn't seem quite as good as Dice, so I end up avoiding it.

@chozang Since 10+ years ago, each time I change job I was always referred by job agents (I did try to find jobs with jobs website, recruitment magazines, etc. but they don't provide jobs with offers above these job agents). Lots of job offers that provide salary range above market average are only available from them, presumably because they also provide background verification of candidates.
Say, average monthly salary of an AP post is normally around HKD 25K here, but recently I received invitation to apply for an AP post at around HKD 38K, with significantly above average "days of annual leave" and other benefits. If it's not "I don't want to go back to Java jobs" I'd probably give it a try.

Stack overflow careers for the job I've had since 2013. I've found it's good for smaller business jobs where you want the IT department to be the ones doing most of the hiring. Stack overflow is good for those employers because it tends to bring relatively better candidates and vice versa.
I know Jeff is behind it, but I was there before discopolypse.

Me? I'm probably a terrible example, but I saw a posting on craigslist, tracked down the founder, and essentially shoved myself into the little startup like a badass.
I thought I documented it somewhere in the status thread, but an hours worth of searching couldn't find it.
It's actually been almost exactly a year since I did this, so supposedly around this post, but searching is hard...

That's pretty impressive. I always thought of Craigslist as being for house cleaning and escorts and that sort of thing.

It looks like they might have toned that down in response to legal heat. There's still one or two listed, but there used to be a whole lot.

Previous: Started off as work placement for the degree I was then studying. Never went back to finish it.
Current: Some random job site. Rang up to ask if the job that had been up for 6 months was still open, to figure out if it was worth sending in my CV - got asked to come in for interview next day.

My last two were "word of mouth/friend-of-a-friend asked me to help them out" and "job fair".

Mostly for me it's been a case of putting an up to date CV on all the main job sites, then fielding 5-10 calls per day from recruiters until one came up with something that sounded worth applying to

I currently get internally head-hunted from one job to another (as what I really do is internal contracting at WTF-U) but I was hired into doing that by an internal advert. As a position, it had the advantage of coming with a permanent employment contract rather than being stuck with going through the HR runaround from fixed-term contract to fixed-term contract like a lot of my contemporaries.
Before that, I got my first job at WTF-U via an actual job ad in a printed newspaper (or perhaps a magazine) that was looking for a suitable new graduate. (I guess it was a position that was originally aimed internally but where the candidate they had in mind bailed, but I never asked if that was the case.) That was a very long time ago and the job market has changed hugely since; there weren't meaningfully many websites for jobs back then.

Current job: I knew someone at the company and he spread my resume around.
Previous job: It's been a while but I'm pretty sure I sent in a resume in response to an ad in the classifieds (newspaper).

Previous? i applied for an internship and sent a code sample in that was .... oh hey it's still on sourceforge (link removed. whoopsies that was doxy)
also........ holy hell that code's embarrassing now........ yeesh.....
anyway current one was basically the office closed and i got the axe but my boss knew a person who had an opening. he called, i sent my resume in and then i had a new jorb

Current job: Probably from a job board (technically I had this job, quit for Previous 1 for about a year and then applied back).
Previous 1: I posted to a ColdFusion job board looking for remote part time work. They liked me and offered me FT. (I had a couple other PT gigs from this as well.
Previous 2: Met my boss at a ColdFusion user group meeting.
Previous 3: Contracted with client of my Previous 4 job.
Previous 4: Job board at the college I graduated from. (This job I had for 10 years).

My current job was posted on Indeed. My previous job was through a recruiter, though I don't remember which site they found my resume on.
If you have your resume posted on a few different job sites (Dice and LinkedIn were my other major sites) , plenty of recruiters should find you.

Since I'm on LinkedIn, I usually get several recruiters a day. (DAMMIT - Read my resume first. Obviously, I don't do Java, or webstacks, or C#, ...) And somehow someone made a connection to my gmail address - which I don't give out at all. (marked-as-spam, marked-as-spam... sigh)

Or jobs across the country.
It is bad enough that most don't realize how long a commute to many places in NJ and Long Island from my house, I am certainly not able to commute to TX or IL.

I'm assuming the fact that there's minimal time difference, coupled with the fact that chances are either client or company can speak Cantonese and/or Mandarin, makes going with them more tempting, compared to a North American company looking to hire.

No. The market is different.
Duty here requires a lot of self discipline / administration, which is a bit rare to find from mainland China workers (I've had directly worked with P/AP/PM from mainland China before during my service a various companies, out of like 30 of them there's only like 3 or 4 that I can confidently assign task to them and wait them complete without periodically checking/tracking progress). Their general unwillingness to work in total English environment also separate their targeting work from what I seek for.

I had a recruiter contact me via my work email and work phone. I assume from seeing my name and company on linkedin and trying the various combinations of initials and surnames @ company.com/.co.uk. Phone, I think they just called the main office and asked for me.
I was pretty annoyed at that and told them in no uncertain terms that I didn't appreciate being emailed at an address I had never shared, in a job I'd started a matter of months before
