Apple AI has been cataloguing women's 'brassiere' photos
-
In 2016, Apple updated its Photos app to recognise more than 4,000 objects, scenes and facial expressions using image recognition. But one Twitter user this week discovered her iPhone had a "hidden folder" labelled "brassiere".
Model Chrissy Teigen also noticed the bizarre feature on her own phone.
"It's true. If you type in 'brassiere' in the search of your iPhotos, it has a category for every boob or cleavage pic you've ever taken. Why." she askedWhy? Because

@el_heffe People sure are upset that modern apps recognize things like snow, trees, specific people, and cleavage.
-
@magus I think it's the implied priorities more than anything. Look at the article and see how many other things (such as other body parts and other articles of clothing) it doesn't know how to categorize, remember that all that code was written by some real person somewhere, and ponder the implications for a moment...

I'd assume they acquired thousands of images of training data to train the AI with. The implications in that case are even worse.

So apparently "brassiere" is one of the objects that it recognizes.
Is there a complete list anywhere, I wonder?
-
Maybe the goal wasn't malicious.
Maybe it was trained for boobs so it could handle it more discreetly if it needed to?

Do the implications have to be negative?
What if you had a sharing app, and it checked to see if the image was under that category, and then popped up a warning?
-
@el_heffe doesnât work on my iPhone, must be a US- only feature.
You guys have it awesome!
-
Apple doesn't actually store your pictures, according to the article, or run a search engine, so that means they intentionally fed their machine learning algorithm pictures of boobs as opposed to what Google does where it matches pictures to nearby text across the internet.

iPhotos? Does she mean iPhoto, which was discontinued years ago, or Photos, which replaced it? Letâs assume the latter ⌠then, sorry,

That's still a bit iffy though. "We detected you're showing too much cleavage on your photo, are you sure it's a good idea to send it?"
I mean, I wouldn't want my phone to patronize me, whether it's the photo app telling me sending tits to strangers is a bad idea, or Apple Pay reminding me smoking is bad when I want to buy a pack of cigs.
-
@maciejasjmj
Could they just implement a big horn sound and someone that screams NUDE! at full volume ... that would make shoulder surfing much easier

From what I can tell, bad things happens when teens share nudes.

I would assume that "Model Chrissy Teigen" doesn't have much expertise beyond knowing what button to press to take pictures of her boobs.

Or add an adversarial pattern to make the phone think it's a cat picture.

@pie_flavor But then you attract furries.

At least they aren't cataloging pictures of these. Right?

SSTV is a tried and true classic for this stuff. It has the advantage of being able to be sent as an mp3, and even better, there's a good chance that the typical interceptor (read: parents) would have no clue what it was. Though, the disadvantage is that it's extremely obvious once you've heard a SSTV transmission. Of course, you only get a tiny 256x256 image.

From what I can tell, bad things happens when teens share nudesSomeday I'll probably burst out "Enough! I have no children and that's none of my business."
So it happens last week, there was people talking about "We should do... <insert things from reduce wastage (that I agree), to pay more on using electricity/water/throw away garbage here>... to protect our environment... for the sake of our children's future." I was pretty close to burst that out to him. :O
Whatever you want to persuade me to do, give me good reason instead of being lazy and ask me to think of something that is non-existent to me.
-
@pie_flavor What makes you think Apple's AI can't classify pussy pictures?
-
The real question is, is it smart enough to tell your bra size yet, and can it notify you if the bra you're wearing is too small/large?
-
Bonus points if it's also smart enough to figure out that you probably don't want to be told that all your old bras are too small now because you've gained 25 lbs.
-
@anotherusername
but will it start offering adds for baby stuff?
-
@luhmann nah, that'll be based on your search history.
"Siri, where is the nearest restaurant that serves ice cream and fried pickles?"
-
I am reminded of Bob Defendi's Death By ClichĂŠ, in which a guy ends up stuck inside a gaming session where the DM is a totally clueless dork. He mentally facepalms when he enters a dungeon room which is lit by flaming brassieres.

But those who burned bras and those who played D&D were (stereotypically) very far apart and usually never met. Or they met in high-school and the bra burners (and their male cohorts) bullied the D&D players mercilessly. Of course, all I know of that time is from bad movies, so...
