Converting a forum to nodebb
-
There is a forum that is being shut down. I am wondering if there is an easyish way to download the content and spin it up as a nodeBB forum (without having any kind of special access).
I already have the nodeBB forum up and running.
I'm not sure about the legalities of doing this - I'm guessing it's not strictly legal?

I'm pretty sure you'd have to ask each and every user for permission to publish their posts.

I mean, there's tens of sites that do nothing except archive 4chan threads. And we can't forget web.archive.org.

@pie_flavor there's tens of sites that do nothing except post TV series online without authorization. Just because people do something doesn't mean it's legal.

But web.archive.org is a pretty legit site - if what they were doing were illegal, they'd be a big target

If it was a clearly public forum at the time that the messages were posted, there's not a vast amount anyone can really do about complaining, especially if you maintain the descriptions of who said what to a reasonable level of accuracy. There's no financial injury and no moral injury, so the scope for action is very limited.

What they are doing IS mostly illegal and they ARE a big target.
They usually dodge any kind of action because:
- The content they host is mostly commercially useless (nobody's downloading a novel from Archive.org instead of from their Kindle for example)
- It's bad PR to attack a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving history
- For a long time (other than the web) they stuck to stuff clearly in the public domain. It's only in the last few years that they've moved on to blatant copyright infringement. (I read an article that they were doing a project to scan all the Toys R Us catalogs from the 1980s, that material is clearly still within copyright. As are all those DOS games, etc.)
That said, old paper and ink libraries who put their entire collections in microfische I believe were also technically infringing copyright, and yet the only reason we have any clue what stories were in Planet Comics issue 6 is because they did.

That's interesting. Yeah, I guess it obviously would be, but then, it's the sort of thing that Toys R Us would probably want them to do.

Obviously commercially useless here in 2017, but still under copyright due primarily to the evil megacorp Disney.
-
So lets say the legal hurdles were cleared - I.E. I got permission or something. How would I go about actually doing this?
@ben_lubar, @julianlam any ideas? Should I go ask on the forums?
-
Also what plugin are we using for oneboxing?
-
@dangeruss We use this:
Plus a self hosted iFramely instance. You can see all of the plugins and customizations we have here:
-
@sloosecannon There was a thread about this here. Archives and libraries are different.

@boomzilla Thank you.
Is there a tutorial somewhere on getting set up for nodeBB development with docker? I'm on windows.
Or should I just download nodejs and mongo locally?
-
@dangeruss Probably nothing on Docker. @ben_lubar did all that here. There's official nodebb documentation on installing in Windows:
http://nodebb-francais.readthedocs.io/projects/nodebb/en/latest/installing/os/windows8.html
Well, Windows 8. It's pretty old. They do have a forum:
Ah, at which I can see that you started a topic to ask about this. Carry on!

What I did was make an implementation of the exporter for nodebb-plugin-import:
My implementation is here if you want to see:
