I suspected) is that iPhone X is means to be read as iPhone 10. So... does that mean they did like Microsoft and skipped 9 in their versioning? Or will they still release an iPhone 9 in 1-2 years? And what will happen to the sequel to the X? Will it be 11 or XI or 10.1 or 10.2? And what will the phone after the iPhone 9 be called in that case? The iPhone 10 (again)? iPhone Classic? Apple has made this all very
It's almost that they want to draw attention that they just straight out copy MS designs.
Incidentally, does has anyone searched to find out who actually owns the patent on 3d face recognition for unlock?

- try to unlock your phone when secretly while pretending to listen to CEO presentation.
- unlock rates are not so successful in certain environments e.g a mix of : skiing goggles, sun glasses, rain, snow.
- A bit clumsy when you need to take a quick picture of a favorite clamshell.
-try to prevent the pickpocket who just stole your phone from unlocking it
-
@mikael_svahnberg
Thats what touchID is for.... oh wait
-
@helix Well, they could just stick the TouchID on the back of the phone, just like where my 5X got the fingerprint scanner. Although then they would have to move or remove the Apple logo, which is probably heresy.
Edit: Or they could make the Apple logo the fingerprint scanner!

Nah it actually has a "floodlight" so it'll basically shine a flashlight at your face when it's dark. So inconspicuous...

Or they could've simply created a portable Touch ID scanner! Or they could've made everybody implant a special ID if they want to use the X!
-
@kt_ Maybe they could do like their laptops and have unlocking via Apple Watch, only make it mandatory?
-
@atazhaia said in Apple Marketing Bullshit Festival:

Even better: they could've made it possible to unlock the X only from a laptop.
-
@kt_ said in Apple Marketing Bullshit Festival:
They removed the jack last year, but added wireless charging only this year. If they did that in one go, the decision would have been much
more understandableless profitableFTFY
After all, you need small increments to justify selling another phone every year
-

It's the most innovative innovation in the history of innovation ever!
-
@dkf Idea Atazhaia. Can sell to Apple for a 7-digit sum of money (in US dollars) or a % of iDevice sales incomes.
-
@atazhaia , @dkf, have you seen the amount of stressful polishing Apple-aficionados do on their shiny apple logo to get rid of the accidental fingerprints? They are more likely to keep their phones unlocked and always on, reducing their standby-time to a matter of minutes, rather than voluntarily put a smudge on their precious apple logo...
-
@atazhaia You don't want to get into a patent fight with Apple...
-
@mikael_svahnberg Just wait until LG invents a self-cleaning logo, then two more years, and Apple will have this Magical Brand New Never Before Seen Innovation

Most devices handle that my hiding the "wedge" while the full screen video is playing.
That'd be quite a trick, considering the wedge is made up of opaque plastic.
Did you think the iPhone X was just displaying an image of a speaker grille on its screen to trick people? (That photo is of a prototype, but it gives you an idea of what the "wedge" is. I can't find a close-up of a production model with it.)
You guys are making me defend Apple. Stop it. There's plenty to criticize about actual Apple, why are you criticizing this idiot stuff?
Oh, that wedge. Yeah, I don't really see the point of extending the screen around that stuff. Meh.
In any case, they aren't the first to do something like that (I think Samsung was), but other companies that have done that didn't include the upper are in their resolution specs.
ETA: Maybe you should be more clear when communicating, instead of just using vague terms like "wedge".

@helix said in Apple Marketing Bullshit Festival:
Yes, us Lumia 950 users have had this for around 2 years.... I think we were all like 'ohh new tech' switched it on only to realize that although the recognition rate is OK, the very principle of 'face to unlock' is a bit flawed.
LG's G-series has had it since at least the G4 (so 2 years or longer). The way it's included is as a SmartLock option, though, so it's just a way to bypass your preferred unlock method. Basically, if facial recognition fails, then it falls back to your primary unlock method.

Right; it's my fault you didn't even bother looking at a photo of the phone before coming here to make your little retarded diss.
I'm so sorry for forcing you to be ignorant at gunpoint.
-
@blakeyrat It was joke. Get off your damn high horse and learn to communicate, like you're always bitching at everyone else to do. Maybe the thicker air will do you some good, too.

I do not believe you.
I think you didn't know what the "wedge" was and also didn't want to ask because God-forbid people think you weren't omniscient, but you just assumed it was some kind of on-screen widget and then said something stupid and now are trying to cover for yourself.
That is what I believe.

So, a friend just informed me that the new iPhones have fast-charging. (Just like any decent Android from the last 2 years.) Will the new iPhones fast-charge with the included charger? Fuck no! You just get the standard slow iPhone charger with those. If you want fast-charging you will have to buy the special USB-C fast-charger and the special USB-C-to-Lightning charging cable first.
(Although, if you own any modern Apple laptop with a USB-C charger you just need to get the special cable.)
Instead of Apple just switching to USB-C to allow fast-charging off any supported charging outlet. Because I guess that's too simple and consumer-friendly.
-
In a related story, Apple's "quality" is questioned
-

Making everyone switch cables AGAIN isn't all that consumer friendly either...dunno what the solution is though

Oh goodie. So now if I'm in public and want to insert an emoji, I have to make a stupid face-- hold that face until the camera detects it-- redo the face because it detected it wrong--
all while everyone around me assumes I'm having a stroke and slowly backs away.
ALSO
Given there's a very high crossover between the idiots-who-buy-latest-Apple-for-vanity crowds, and the idiots-who-are-vain-and-get-"work"-done crowd, I can't wait for the first lawsuit from the Botox Brigade claiming discrimination because they can't actually emote.

Also, it's mostly bullshit
TLDR: sales taxes eat up a lot, and you're meant to pay VAT when bringing it back into the UK

@jaloopa "have to pay taxes" is a lot different than "illegal".

It invalidates the sum, because the sum ignores around €160 of taxes you end up paying.
-
@pleegwat Maybe.
But let's be clear: flying to New York, buying an iPhone X, and flying back to Europe is not illegal.
-
@blakeyrat True.

Actually, it is. The maximum value of wares you're allowed to import from non-EU countries is 700€. Everything after that has to be taxed. If you do not declare wares beyond that value and are caught the customs agents are required to bebin the proceedings for being tried for tax fraud. And yes, tax fraud is a crime.
