I've never seen that mode of reset fail, although I suppose it's theoretically possible.
Depends how low-level the programming for that key combo is... I think Ctrl-Alt-Del is handled via software in Linux, and the equivalent "oh my god my computer froze let's hard reset" key combo is
Alt-SysReq-R-E-I-S-U-B

I'm pretty sure it's handled in hardware. It'll reset the phone in most any mode...

Magic sysrq is also in software. But ctrl-alt-del is well in userspace, I'm not sure the kernel handles it at all, while magic sysrq is handled deep in the kernel. As long as the keyboard driver is still running the sysrq will work.
Personally I prefer using RSEISUB.

@deadfast Yeah, because I totally didn't address that literally one sentence later.

@accalia I have replaced several iPhone batteries. What's the problem?
-
@heterodox Except that is my point. All batteries are removable because literally none of them are hardwired to the mobo. You might find it a hassle, I don't care, but you can't say they aren't removable.

To replace the battery in an iPhone requires how many tools exactly? Multiple, no doubt. Let's compare this with, say, the Lumia 950. How many tools needed to replace the battery? None: simply pop the back off, and the battery can be lifted out with zero effort.

In this context, 'removable' means 'can be removed quickly and easily without specialist tools'.

Apparently, your iPhones batteries are the problem.
-

You didn't. You said that:
You just need to buy a few tiny phillips screwdrivers and watch some Youtube videos.
This is what lead me to believe that you did not read the original post because if you had, you'd know that in addition to buying a few tiny phillips screwdrivers you also have to buy a freezing spray and a new display cover glass because you'll break it in the process.

What if they were? By your logic they'd be still removable because you could just desolder the old battery and remove it, couldn't you?

Probably also: Without voiding the warranty.

Did you do the version that required soldering?

On my phone it's power+volume down+5-10 seconds.
On every phone I've tried, just holding power eventually resets it.
The latter at least doesn't work when my phone hangs, it's always the first thing I try. I was unaware of the former, will try to remember it next time my phone hangs.

Am I supposed to call you a communist, socialist or libertarian?
I'm really not too bothered which inaccurate label you use. So long as it isn't “trans-hooker”.

I don't think we should be requiring consumer devices to be fixable by third parties. Instead, we should give the manufacturer the ability to opt out of that by having them replace the device with a wholly new one (of equivalent position in product line-up as when the first device was purchased) at their cost, inclusive of any labour and charges for conveying the device by post or courier, for a Reasonable amount of time. I think 5 years would be pretty reasonable for a phone.
It's actually kind of important for that requirement to be there, for a wide variety of reasons, and there are a lot of people pushing for it. Look up "right to repair" for details.

One handed whilst shaking vigorously.
No, it's the other hand you're supposed to shake vigorously.
[lorne kates watching a video on his phone with what appears to be a hot dog in one hand and his cell phone in the other]
"Yeah baby you fix that sink drain"
[shakes cell phone vigorously]

@julianlam Programmer's Santa will probably give you a removeable battery at christmas, with no phone attached to it.

Yes, that's the sort of touch-buttons I'm used to seeing. They're part of the phone (just like the physical buttons)-- which is why I'm always confused at people who complain about hardware buttons taking up screen-real-estate.
Nexus 7.
The buttons are software only, and can be hidden.
Samsung S7
The buttons are touch screen, physically part of the phone, but the home button is press + touch. Press goes home, touch is used for other features, like fingerprint sign in.
Samsung s5
Physical buttons.

Should I ask what the battery is for, and whether it requires surgical intervention by a proctologist or gynecologist to replace it?

As long as you lead with the narrow end you'll probably be fine.
Probably.

From "50 Thing Atalanta Penradgonne is No Longer Allowed to Do at Hogwarts" (cheers, Sara!):
- Polishing my wand in the common room is acceptable. "Polishing my wand" in the common room is not.
In the Appendices:
- My wand does not vibrate.
- Telling Professor Snape that he has a very big wand is inappropriate.
- All the other boys do not do that with their wands.
- It is not a good idea to put my wand in there.
- I will stop teasing males about their 'magic wands'.
- Ollivander's does not sell Hitachi Magic Wands, not even to special customers.
- Buying one from Lovecraft or Good Vibrations and attempting to use it for classwork is in poor taste.
- The Patronus double entendre about 'white stuff coming out of a wand' is getting old.
And finally:
-
@scholrlea I'm reminded of the Magic 2.0 books, about geeks who stumble upon a trick to hack the universe and become wizards.
The first and most important rule every new wizard is taught about using his magic wand is, "don't make the obvious joke!"
