Uninstall the Uninstaller?

  • I'm sure everyone here has come to hate the way that software updaters sort of accumulate in Windows. (And then how they try to reinstall software that you specifically uninstalled. CoughApple UpdaterCough)

I, for one, was quite surprised to find the exact opposite:

I wonder what happens when I "remove the software uninstall utility"?

Sadly, it isn't quite the disaster I had hoped for. Pretty stupid, though, seeing as I could even more easily just remove the ATI software myself by clicking on the other ATI programs beneath that one. Since when has removing an uninstaller meant using the uninstaller to remove something else?

  • Yeah, cases like these tend to make sense in the end, but you do wish they'd be worse. My favourite is the Firefox installer:

    Firefox installation -- Cancel cancelling

Does Cancel cancel, or cancel cancelling?

  • FF inherits this from 7-Zip. Go bug Igor Pavlov about it if you wish...

  • 7-Zip is a bundle of WTFs ... Most of which seem to be already reported, but nothing is ever getting fixed.

I much prefer StuffIt's way of working (including wrapping the contents of an archive in a folder if needed), but 7-Zip is faster and more reliable. Back to the old problem of rival programs that never get everything right ...

You could say "just fix it yourself", also, but it's actually been done before and ui patches rejected because the ui wasn't important enough to review and test, and had to be kept "simple". That got me to switch back to winrar and never look back.
