but gearz r kewl!!!!
-
Really easy to find. Here's some from the first page of a Google image search
(this one's especially good since the teeth don't mesh)
-
@lorne-kates That's OK. The gear on the left appears to be entirely unengaged with the others, and it is possible that the other two don't connect either.
Could we draw a parallel (not connecting) with the Wifi software…?

@mott555 that's pretty cool :-)

In other news, here's an actual legit gear:
Designed for a water pump to give high speed while descending, but a lot of torque while ascending.
Ben: the link button appears to be broken on images. Looks like it missed adding a close paren.

@ben_lubar But it doesn't work on someone else's machine.

I wonder if it doesn't work again if you use hypergears.
-
@rhywden Tricky. 3d gears can exist in 4d space just like 2d gears can exist in 3d space, so existing 3d solutions work, though their direct 4d equivalents may either not exist or not work.

The banner of the Machine Empire, from Power Rangers Zeo:

So? Same problem as all nearly all ones like this: a graphic designer drawing one image of a gear and simply resizing it for all needs. (The “Education works” poster is an exception, which makes it a bigger WTF, if you ask me: they drew gears that look like they would mesh fairly well, and then mesh too many of them.)
-
It would be faster to list all the times graphic designers have gotten gears right.
I think it's a null set.

@masonwheeler WHAT?
There's an inaccuracy in the show about giant ninja robots fighting dozens of Jackie Chan clones made out of plumber's putty commanded by a witch who lives in a sewer on the moon?
This will not stand.

Considering what I've heard about education day-to-day life from various first-hand sources, this picture looks quite accurate to me...

For those unfamiliar with the "FIRST Robotics Competition", it's a high-school competition pairing students with adult mentors from industry in an attempt to show how awesome science and engineering are as career paths. Each year has a brand new competition, with a new theme.
This years theme was "Steamworks", a Steampunk theme harkening back to the idealized Victorian steam-and-gears-powering-everything era. In the center of the playing field are "Airships", which the robots need to deliver gears to. While the gears used in actual gameplay more-or-less work, the graphics on the airship, well, don't.

I decided to see what the newish fourth town in Vindictus looked like, so I took the boat there, and was greeted by a tower with gears all along the side. I don't remember precisely, but I don't think any of the gears were anywhere near close enough to make contact.

SO CLOSE.
Of course, this could well explain why the airship needs gear deliveries. They keep stripping out a couple and can't figure out why

I was wasting time andI noticed this example in the game I was playing.
