Spotify wants to let music labels choose what you listen to
-
What do you think? Could I be a tabloid journalist? Is my topic title clickbaity enough?
-
I am a user of the free tier, and I never use playlists.
OTOH I hated it very much when for several years, if you listened to literally ANYTHING on Soundcloud, John Legend's All Of Me started playing afterwards as a "related track".
-
@RaceProUK Eh, I generally just grab one of the genre playlists or daily playlists and let it choose music for me already. When I hear something I like I tick it to let it know it did a good job and to give me more stuff like it. Sponsored songs, as long as they follow the genre I'm listening to somewhat, would be indistinguishable from the rest of the songs for me.

do they still require a FB account to use?
because if so :DONOTWANT.AVI: on that account alone.
also play music still includes a youtube red subscription and has a bigger music library.

Nope: my Spotify account is purely Spotify and the installer just hijacked window focus while I was writing this post

ah. into the art bin with it then.
-
@accalia The mobile app doesn't hijack anything. But it also doesn't let you choose songs directly without premium; you have to listen to playlist/artist/album/radio on shuffle.

I signed up a few weeks before they announced that Facebook integration shit. Like I want to spam my friends with every song I listen to (and some of my friends did exactly that).
My brother signed up just after, and went for the obvious choice of creating a fake FB profile (Elgor Promethius I think)
Is the native application still awful and doing things like hijacking the close button to force you to do file -> exit to close it? I used to use the web interface purely because of that dick move

I just leave it in the notification area playing

Worked for me.
You know what also worked? ⇓

There is a setting now which makes the close button the close button. No problem with the native app nowadays, except it's not really native. The UI takes a long time to appear.
-
FWIW I've never had a problem with the Windows app. It hooks into my keyboard media keys and sits in the
traynotification area happily playing music. However it didn't like adding my local music collection, and the interface for browsing through that leaves much to be desired.

If it follows their ad engine, I highly doubt the songs will be relevant.

@anotherusername This might be the best covfefe joke I've read on this forum so far.

I just listen to FM radio. It breaks for ads just once an hour instead of spotify breaking once a minute.

Yeah, but come on, it's less than $5 per month for premium, so there's really no reason to use the free tier.
-
@kt_ In Soviet Canuckistan it's $10 a month, which in addition to being more than $5 a month, is way more than $0 a month.

That sucks for you

Well, art costs. I feel much better knowing that I pay at least this little amount per month.

I pay $4 a month for Pandora... never have to listen to ads. Wonderful.
-
I pay £0 per month for Google Play Music, and can listen to all the music I have
acquiredbought and uploaded with no ads

I buy music from time to time, sure. Doesn't change the fact that streaming services are awesome!

True. I stream my music all the time.
I was paying for Play Music unlimited until my card expired and I didn't get round to updating the details. Thought I'd try going back to the free tier of what I uploaded before I started paying and I suddenly rediscovered a load of music I'd forgotten about.
If I buy an album every month or two, I'll still be paying less than the subscription and have a gradually increasing library that doesn't disappear when I stop paying. And it's all available from any PC or phone with an internet connection

I understand where you're coming from, but I still prefer streaming and I'm prepared to deal with the risk of me deciding to stop paying, the company going under or changing a device.
The last one I deal with by using Spotify, which works great on a great number of platforms. That's the reason why I never went Apple Music (apart from the free trial). It's awesome, but for example I wouldn't be able to use it while at work.
As for building the collection with the money I spend on Spotify, this wouldn't really work for me. I use the family plan, which I share with my girlfriend and a friend. The family plan is 30 PLN, or around $7. Which means my share is 10 PLN, or like $2.5. I could buy an album every 4-6 months, if that was my budget.

Wow, where do you live/what station are you listening to? I stopped listening to FM radio years ago, partly because of the ever-increasing amount and frequency of ad breaks (and the increasing awfulness of that ad content)...

There's still some reasonable stations left in the UK (depending on what your taste in listening runs to, of course). @wharrgarbl is in Brazil so who knows.

Here in 'Murica, they play the same 20 songs over and over all day. All the cool stuff is on Pandora and Spotify.

Here in Poland we got one good station left. That's all.

yay
With 850 stations, iHeartMedia is the largest radio station group owner in the United States, both by number of stations and by revenue. The 850 stations reach more than 110 million listeners every week, and 245 million every month.
unfortunately, my music tastes aren't popular enough to be broadcast anywhere
including spotify or pandora, which can't even figure out any other similar artists, and in some cases have never even heard of the original artist that i searched for.i pick a station on pandora and get the same 25 songs over and over because it's the only 25 songs they can even find.

@darkmatter case in point:
2 results, use up and down arrow or tab keys to navigate
No results for "cat rapes dog"seriously, come the fuck on?
The band "Cat Rapes Dog" is motherfucking awesome and hilarious.
same thing for Cenobita... amazing latino (mexican) group, zero found mainstream.
at least Velvet Acid Christ resulted in something though
as did VNV nation and Coventant
so i suppose i can only complain so much

Just buy a Spotify subscription already!
Unless I completely misunderstood you and you only meant that radio stations are awful, not that streaming services are equally bad. ;)
Filed under: Methinks you're greatly overestimating how niche you are. ;)

You might actually be able to listen on iHeartRadio.com -- I don't think you need an account to listen to live radio, but I don't know if they do IP sniffing to region-lock. They have some stations that are commercial-free, even.

@raceprouk click "Live Radio". I have no idea what's wrong with their Pandora-like service, I never use it :)

Oh, look at me I'm so edgy and non conformist. I listen to this band you've probably never heard of because I'm just so much better than you
Buy a Taylor Swift album, hipster
yes, this is in case anyone missed it
-
@yamikuronue I clicked that and got a server error. Refreshing worked though.
Still couldn't get the site working properly though: I don;t think it plays nicely with the extensions I have installed. Might try again later.

I've used Spotify quite a bit, and it's so far been the best of the lot.
Pandora wants me to listen to emopop no matter how much I tell it I don't want to, and Spotify has introduced me to more music than Pandora has.
However, some of the things they have, they only have like one song of. Like Megababe (A band that's easier to buy than pirate. Who would have believed it!?). So far the only reliable place I can get music I like is, therefore, the Windows Store. And yet Groove Music makes you pay to turn the radio on at all, and won't let me choose indie bands I know they have as my interests, because the interests page has no search.
