It's been a while since McAfee the man seemed to do anything other than rant and rave about the Feds not being able to do anything with the iPhone in some terrorist case.

Turns out, he's been building new businesses.

@Arantor What were the terms and conditions on that voucher?

  • sockdevs

@Yamikuronue without seeing one and knowing that McAfee the man is involved, I can only speculate that it might involve hookers, cocaine and a privacy-based phone, without the phone.

  • Winner of the 2016 Presidential Election

@Yamikuronue check out the privacy phone... it's like Jeff had input on the design

  • I survived the hour long Uno hand

@Arantor I'm wondering if it's "we can share your data at any time" like most terms and conditions XD

  • sockdevs

@Yamikuronue unlike the conversation of earlier, this would include actual irony if it were the case.

Not new, as it turns out. According to the Google, MGT Capital Investments has been in business since 1977. According to the MGT website, John McAffee joined the company in May of last year and officially became CEO in November.

A company that's been in business for 40 years, hired THAT GUY as their CEO? :wtf:

    Holy Shit. There's more.

"Also as part of its corporate efforts in secure technologies, MGT is growing its capacity in mining Bitcoin. Currently at 5.0 PetaHash, the Company’s facility in Washington state produces about 100 Bitcoins per month, ranking it as one of the largest U.S. based Bitcoin miners. Further, MGT is in active discussions with financial partners to grow Bitcoin output materially.

Lastly, MGT stockholders have voted to change the corporate name of MGT to "John McAfee Global Technologies, Inc." Following a dispute over ownership and permitted usage of the name McAfee, The Company and Intel have agreed to a mediation process to avoid unnecessary legal costs."

As of 2:39 Eastern Time, today, MGT's stock price was $0.99, down 5%.

So, the first thing he does as CEO is suggest a name change to get more corporate recognition and then start a fuss on how he'll be paid additionally, on top of CEO pay, for his name.

Is the board completely blind.... how does this company still exist...?

give it time. big corporations never die fast, even after the death blow is struck.

I mean, let's start at the source here if we're going to ask these questions.

So when his software raped XP machines by quarantining system files, that was just alluding to his personal crimes.

In all fairness, McAfee sold the company to Intel in the 90s, before Windows XP existed. He may be guilty of a lot of things, but he hasn't had anything to do with the company (McAfee) or their shitty software for 20+ years.

Edit: McAfee left the company in 1994, it changed owners/merged with other companies several times before being bought by Intel in 2010. He should probably be in prison but the shitty AV software isn't his fault.

...and the feature list is missing precisely the one single thing which would make me think about actually maybe buying it:

    -HW feature API stubs

as in, app requests microphone access and refuses to install if i don't give it? provide a dummy API that actually does nothing but enables me to "allow microphone access" and allows the app to think everything is normal, but the data coming in/out the interface is ignored/useless/blank.

because i'm not sure just hard(ware) disconnect of those interfaces will be handled well by apps, so I'm not sure if they actually solved the "be secure and private, or be able to use this app" half of the "privacy" problem.

it would be actually kinda cool (though impossible to check) if the conditions contained "we can share all the data we can retrieve, with anyone, anytime, for any reason", and then no data on anything ever would be shared, with them saying "well, the conditions say all the data we can retrieve..."

  • @blakeyrat said in McCovfefe:

probably only because "accused" is different from "convicted" at least until the Duluth model is still not the globally default framework that all courts use

  • He fled the Belize police to avoid questioning. Like, "got a bug-out bag and went cross-country in a jeep" fled. They haven't pursued because bribery in Guatemala works.

There is zero reason McAfee shouldn't be in prison right now, awaiting extradition back to Belize. Except that he's rich, and bribery works.

As I live in a corrupt 3rd world country, I found McAffe version of the story perfectly believable, that would be just a normal tuesday around here.
