TIL: Resonance

You know how they say the body of a guitar is hollow because it acts as a resonance chamber, amplifying the vibration of the strings and making it all louder?
A few hours ago I discovered that a half-empty box of Kleenex can do the same thing.
You know how I discovered that? Because I have one on my nightstand, and I'd set my phone on it overnight. Then I got an email, which made it go bzzt bzzt, and the box amplified it so loud that it woke me up at 3 in the morning! :(

@masonwheeler I've heard that if you place one of those bell-type alarm clocks in an empty coffee can it can wake the dead.
-
@masonwheeler I once got woken up by raindrops from my roof hitting a half-deflated beach ball my neighbors had somehow lost in my yard and rolled directly underneath the ONE gutter that has a leak. It made me very irritable. I killed the beachball with a knife.

My brother accidentally discovered that nasal passages can amplify sound from earbuds fairly well. He stuck the buds in his nostrils for a joke, but then found that if he opened his mouth, the rest of us could hear whatever was playing on his MP3 player.
-
I'm not sure whether to or at that.

One of my friends has a neighbor who created an automatic gong with a very large resonance box around it. He had set it to go off at midnight EVERY NIGHT, and got arrested after the first time it activated. It was apparently loud enough to be heard about 50 miles away. It broke a lot of windows as well.
The device was destroyed the next day.

@BrisingrAerowing Woah! I suddenly find myself wanting to see the schematics for that...

So, would you say that it might have been called a "gong bong bomb"?
(My wife is still laughing at this story!)
