Got to the bottom of https://what.thedailywtf.com/topic/17088/in-other-news-today/3765
Last post has a reply to it despite there being no further posts.
Clicked the reply button which then showed the post from a different thread (Americans waffle on about rights).
The original thread then streamed in the thread's first posts again under the reply post, and reset the counter back to 0.
Scrolled down enough to cause more streaming whereupon it kept the counter, messed up the scrollbar, and sent me back to the top.

Y'know, this may sound crazy, but I think I can live without it.
It is indeed a rather poor substitute for the real thing, I'd agree...
