Windows Mixed Reality Thread

So Windows has this app now built in if you have the creator update, that allows you to manage your headsets and emulate one if you don't have one.
I tried the emulator, and it kept not really working: my Y button didn't do anything when it told me to press it in the demo they had.
I know @Tsaukpaetra has a Hololens, and that that's supposed to be the same basic environment, so he's one I'd of course like to hear thoughts on this thing from, but has anyone else tried it out?
I've ordered a headset, but I won't see it until August. I kind of want to play around with it before then.
EDIT: Note that the current headsets just announced may only have VR, but $300 is pretty cheap.
-
Did you try
Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start

I want to do this, but I don't really have $1500 sitting around to spend on that that I can't better spend on something like furniture. I really should go buy a couch one of these days...
-
@e4tmyl33t Yes, couches are good. :)
-
@masonwheeler I know, I know...I'm just a combination of procrastinating and trying to figure out where the fuckhueg buffet thing that's currently occupying the space I'd like a couch to go will end up.
Plus side, I did manage to get my main table cleared off from all the Lootcrate and Naturebox boxes that were scattered all over it, so I could take a couple leaves out, move it more into the center of its room, and be ready to be used as a gaming table.
-
@e4tmyl33t The new ones are VR (I think; they do have cameras, I just don't know if they're meant to show you what they see or just scan the environment) only, but are $300. That's why I bought one.

you COULD have linked to the store page you know.....
MSDN link rot isn't so bad to have prevented you.
Here, i'll save you the effort: https://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/en_US/pdp/HP-Windows-Mixed-Reality-Headset-Developer-Edition/productID.5106762300

@accalia Like even the holiday release of Acer's will only be $400 for the goggles plus motion controllers, $200 cheaper than Oculus.
And I mean it probably won't have a great game library, because it's exclusively AppX packages, but that's still insane.

Shit, it's still at $1500? I got mine for $3000...

I wonder if that means our Hypatia experience won't be portable to it. Hmmm.... Maybe with continuum? But geeze, way to limit, right?

@accalia I know of no such link, I just put a number in based on the last price I thought I heard somewhere months ago.

fair enough then.
/me looks around for the blakeys
yep. looks like you're safe.
:-D

@e4tmyl33t I think you're thinking of Google's silly product that no one wanted.
-
@Magus Addendum:
Part of Hololens' problem was that it came out not terribly long after Glass. They aren't even remotely similar devices, and have drastically different use-cases, but people somehow got the impression that Hololens was just Microsoft's version of Glass at first, which slowed things a bit.
All you had to do was watch any Hololens demo to dispel that - people are shocked when you show them year old demos of it even now.

@Tsaukpaetra It's supposed to look like this:
Ah. Got that after a Cumulative Update got applied.
It tried and failed to download stuff or something. Oh well.
I have a Hololens, why should I mess with an emulator? :D
Yeah.... Can't set it up. Oh well.
And I'm kinda sad that it doesn't appear to support Holographic Remoting. :(
Oh well....
-
@Tsaukpaetra Sad!
It worked on my machine, but I couldn't control it properly.

The link is now https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/d/hp-windows-mixed-reality-headset-developer-edition/91thzqtvgspf/
I give it two more weeks before it changes again.

Is there a reason MS's offering is 4-10 times more expensive than the rest?

i will never understand why Microsoft wants it to be difficult to link to things on their web properties......
-
@RaceProUK Yes? Completely different projection technology.

well for one, the hololens is a self contained PC in its own right.
that does add to the cost a fair but.

I thought I should post here again, because I've used the headsets a bit more as of late.
Skyworld, which I've mentioned before, is a great game, and so is Superhot VR.
I recently got StreamVR working on the thing too, and have noticed that an update came in that added a "Location picker" app or something, which let me swap from the cliffhouse to a spacious multi-floor office on top of a skyscraper.
Also, Edge has great WebVR support. Every YouTube video gets a headset button when you have it set up.
