Self-Serve Mafia category not ignored/got unignored
-
I have the Mafia parent category ignored, but the Self-Serve Mafia category still showed up on my unread list today. Watching and re-ignoring Mafia seems to have fixed it. Or maybe it was a random page load glitch like timestamps not always being formatted.
-
@coderpatsy May be related to your category ignore predating the creation of the self-serve subcategory? In that case not inheriting the ignore might be intended.
-
I made it public last night because people were complaining about joining the group being too hard.
-
@ben_lubar Ah, that with @PleegWat explains things. Thanks.
-
@ben_lubar That's cool, it's still a bug.
-
@Magus I'm not so sure. I can think of a good reason to have a category muted, but still watch a subcategory e.g. if you're not interested in Programmer Testing, but want to keep an eye on Bot Testing. Therefore, I'd favour a new subcategory (or one previously hidden being made public) being visible by default, regardless of the visibility of the parent, just in case the user wants to keep track of it. In other words, leave the choice up to the user.

Then it's a bug that ignoring the parent ignores the subcategories.
-
@Maciejasjmj Eh... not so much. Chances are, if you're ignoring a category, you want to ignore almost all of the subcategories too. In that respect, the behaviour is correct. If you want to ignore all but one, then you ignore the parent (the setting propagates down the tree), then unignore the one or two children you want to see still.

Then it's a bug that making a category public doesn't turn it ignored by default if the parent is ignored.
It's simply inconsistent behavior.
-
@Maciejasjmj But what if that category is of interest to someone that wants to track it? If it shows up ignored by default, then the user has to go searching for it, which they won't do as they don't know it's there. But if it's public by default regardless of the parent's visibility, then the user will see it.
Yes, it's inconsistent. But it's inconsistent for a reason.
-
@RaceProUK I know for a fact that I don't want to see new topics in there. That's why I have it ignored: new ones kept showing up and I had to keep ignoring them. I don't care why that isn't working now, I just want it to work.

The admins/mods/slackers should have made an announcement that the new category was created, and it should have been ignored by default if the parent was ignored. Then no one would have been confused. They might still complain, but they wouldn't be confused.
-
I find it amusing that when something changes out from under them, even technical people act like ordinary users: "I don't care why it's more consistent, my cheese moved and I'm upset"
-
@Yamikuronue IMO. technical people aren't a special class of user and shouldn't be treated as one.
-
@heterodox I agree -- but we all like to think we're special ;)
-
@Yamikuronue
Technical people are 1000x more awful about "my cheese moved" changes than ordinary users.Maybe even 1000x1000x more awful.
-
For a forum where categories change weekly or even daily, then yes, ignoring by default if the parent is ignored is probably the way to go. But for here, where there's a change every, what, six months? I'd favour seeing them by default.

-
@accalia Is that really a very short bus, or just a Land Rover Defender painted yellow?
-
@Yamikuronue It isn't consistent with anything. Something I blocked showed up. If I cared about that category, I wouldn't have blocked it. Nothing I care about will happen in that category, and thus there will never be any reason for me to see anything in it. If there was, I could go unblock it.
Why don't I go make a bunch of trolleybus subcategories? Wouldn't you just love to have them all unblocked?

403 Forbidden

@Maciejasjmj Yes, yes, only moderators are allowed to abuse people, I know.

No, only they have been screened for the unwillingness to do work.

No, we don't let the mods abuse people like that.

On Node?

Ignoring a category ignores subcategories. Same with un-ignoring. Categories are not-ignored by default for all users when they're created.

I don't like dogs. Keep them away from me.
"What about schnauzers?"
Yes, even schnauzers.
"What about border collies?"
Yes, those are dogs to. Keep them away from me.
"Here's a German Sheppard."
Still a dog. Come on, guys, seriously...
"Poodle poodle poodle."
For fuck's sake, those are all DOGS! I DON'T LIKE DOGS!
"How about a beagle?"
I am going to literally murder you.

Do you like cats?
-

Okay, you got it. No more dogs.
Wait, this just in: someone invented this thing:
Does that still bother you? I mean, I guess it's technically a dog, but....
