    Death is all around us.

I tried to find what it means, I found they say it when they see a corpse.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/dwarffortress/comments/2sfb3q/horrified_dwarves/

I lost a fort to a combination of this and the bug where a severed limb is occasionally categorised as a bone.

A dwarf only holds a thought in their head for a limited amount of time. good thoughts decrease the stress counter and bad thoughts decrease it. Because the thought will leave them they can have the same thought again after a certain time interval has passed. If they don't have enough good thoughts to even things out, walking past the same corpse repeatedly can stress them to death.

I couldn't figure out why my fortress was dying of stress, and I thought it was due to regular sieges but I realised too late that there were severed limbs in my bone carvers stockpile which were causing my dwarves to freak out anytime they were near the workshops. By the time I got them dumped a full fledged tantrum spiral had erupted.

This calls for a front-page article, about a coworker who uses severed limbs in his workshop.

I assume the severed limbs were in the stockpile because they allowed refuse in general instead of just bones. That's a bad idea for many reasons, including the fact that storing rotting garbage in an open area underground generates a lot of miasma very quickly.

The severed limbs were probably troll limbs that were severed when the military fought some trolls with sharp weapons. Trolls can either enter the map through the caverns below the fortress or as war animals when goblins siege the fortress.

In the context of rotting limbs and possible plague, Rakust's decision to have a bath with soap sounds quite clever.

  • Dwarf Fortress 0.44.01

This is the artifact release, featuring the ability to send your dwarves off to cause trouble in the world, improved kobold sites, cover identities, artifact questers, and a bit of artifact diplomacy.

In fort mode, the 'c' screen which used to list civilizations still does that as a suboption, but its main purpose now is to show the world map and allow you to interact with it. You can either raid a neighbor generally, or send off squads to recover specific artifacts or rescue particular people (in which case, the squads will still bring back other artifacts and prisoners, but focus on the goal.) A squad questing after an artifact will seek out information if the first site doesn't work out, and this might take several months, so be prepared. Squads can also be captured during raids, though typically someone will return to tell the tale. When squads return, a report will become available; a yellow 'R' will appear over on the left margin, and pressing 'r' will let you see it. Sometimes reports are quite lengthy as squads stumble from tavern to tavern; you can press enter to skip to the end of the path animation.

There are some rough edges here! Be sure not to send off your commander if you are planning to reorganize your military, as they are the only one with the power to assign new squads and cannot do so while off the map. There was a last-minute hiccup with artifacts known to be held by people (rather than stored on sites); these fort-mode missions will be fruitless for the moment; the most common instance here is books authored by people that then hang on to them, so don't try to steal their books! It says on the map screen when an artifact is held by somebody, so it should be easy to avoid. Raids do not bring back non-artifacts or build skills; these issues may or may not be addressed in the short-term depending on difficulties that arise.

The interactions with heroes and invading armies are more straightforward. There will either be 'P'etitions or a diplomacy popup to handle.

In adventure mode, you can assume a cover identity. You do this from the 'k' conversation menu (if you are already talking to somebody, it'll be hidden in "start new conversation".) If you choose to link your identity to a civilization, you'll be carrying that baggage with you, especially when you are being interrogated by goblin guards, so one should be prudent. To turn off the identity, go back to the "assume an identity" menu and choose the 'x' "no identity" option. You can also reuse existing identities from this menu.

People in adventure mode that are seeking an artifact will list "missing treasure" among their troubles, and you can then inquire further.

In order to name an object, use 'I' to interact with it, and it'll be one of the options for appropriate objects. For example, you can give a name to your spear or waterskin, but not to the water or food you start with.

There are also various adventure rough edges. For instance, if you pick up and then immediately replace a museum piece in adventure mode, and then tell somebody about it, you'll get credit as a Treasure Hunter. It'll be difficult to fix that without additional property information, etc. It's also generally hard right now to find artifact quests, as most things are in their proper place and/or not subject to an outside claim. We'll be working with this a bit as we generally work on stabilizing the release.

Overall, many of the changes occurred under the hood, in preparation for the myth and magic release, but now the magic release will be able to incorporate artifacts of all kinds without additional delay, so hopefully it was time well spent.

As usual, your old saves should work, but please back them up before diving into the new release! It is quite likely that forts will fall into technical ruin as bugs come up and are handled at this early stage. Old forts won't have object additions like the pedestals and display cases, but they should be able to send out raids from the 'c' screen.

We will be focusing on the worst bugs (crashes etc.) at first, and then we'll broaden out into other bugs, old and new, and minor suggestions/usability improvements, as well as a general smoothing out of the new features. We're still working on the design side of the first magic release, so we anticipate we'll be doing smaller releases for a while.

ADDENDUM: My Linux computer died during the release process, so the Linux version will have to be delayed until we figure that out.

    df-ai 0.43.05-r3

    Installation instructions

    Changes since the previous version

    Blueprints

The AI can now build a fort using a system based on the TileGen map generator in Alien Swarm: Reactive Drop.

    • If generating a fortress layout from a blueprint fails too many times in a row, the AI will use the old layout generation system. You can disable this in dfhack-config/df-ai.json.
    • The blueprint plan included in this version attempts to replicate the layout from previous versions.
    • Known issue: The legacy plan does not yet include a cistern.
    • Some new rooms have been added in conjunction with new features:
      • There are now jails near the infirmary.
      • The underground farms are now irrigated without cheating.
    • A work-in progress visual editor is now available for editing plans and rooms.

    Weblegends integration

Wondering what the AI is doing, but don't want to stop it to check? View the current status of the AI in a web browser!

    • Simply install weblegends 0.43.05-r3 in addition to df-ai to enable this functionality.
    • Available views include a summary of the AI's status, an extended version of the ai report command, a live floor plan of the fortress, and the version of the df-ai plugin.
    • Additionally, new information has been added to ai report, such as a list of jobs, the available metals, any curses a citizen or visitor might have, and the reason a task has not yet completed.

    Other improvements

    • lockstep has received a few bugfixes, so it should be more stable now. If you still experience problems, try running df-ai with an empty dfhack.init file and adding the commands you want back one by one.
    • The AI now reports on criminal justice, assigns law enforcement administrators, and convicts criminals.
    • manage_labors can now be set to "autolabor" or "labormanager" for additional automated setup of those plugins.
    • Soldiers are not assigned to train until their barracks has been excavated.
    • Squads are now dismissed from attacking caged enemies that are not about to be thrown into a hole.
    • The first squad is now a squad of marksdwarves to avoid being incapable of fighting birds until the third squad is created.
    • The military is no longer sent to attack foreigners that fight citizens in self defense, such as when a citizen is a werebeast or has gone insane.
    • The military will more consistently attack wild animals that are threatening the lives of citizens.
    • The AI is now capable of building some additional furniture, like floor hatches, restraints, and cages.
    • Trees containing stuck dwarves will be cut down.
    • Metal items are now made in a more consistent way.

    weblegends 0.43.05-r3

    Installation instructions

    New Plugin

Introducing weblegends! It's an enhanced version of legends mode that you can use while playing Dwarf Fortress or watching DF-AI play for you!

    • References to historical figures, civilizations, sites, governments, regions, and artifacts automatically link to their respective pages.
    • No export needed - weblegends will automatically load data from the game as it is requested.
    • Long lists are automatically split across multiple pages to reduce load times.

    Plugin API

Plugins for a plugin? That's right, you can write weblegends plugins, which are plugins for a DFHack plugin, which is a plugin for Dwarf Fortress.

    • Include weblegends-plugin.h in your plugin. The version of weblegends-plugin.h in this release of weblegends is guaranteed to work in all future releases, but new features may be added in future versions of weblegends-plugin.h.
    • For this initial version of weblegends, three functions are available in the plugin API:
      • add_weblegends_handler takes a prefix (ex. "df-ai"), a handler (described below), and an optional label (ex. "Artificial Intelligence"). It returns true if the handler was added, or false if the handler was not added, either because another handler already existed with the same prefix, or because the prefix was invalid (prefixes must not be empty or contain /).
      • remove_weblegends_handler takes a prefix (ex. "df-ai") and removes the handler associated with it. You should call remove_weblegends_handler if your plugin is unloading to avoid crashes from attempting to access your (no longer available) handler function.
      • weblegends_describe_event takes an output stream and a Dwarf Fortress history_event and writes a description of the event to the output stream. If weblegends is loaded, the description will automatically link to related pages in weblegends.
    • Handlers are functions that take an output stream and a suffix of the address (ex. "/report"). They return true if the page was found, and return false if the page was not found. Handlers should write a full HTML page encoded in CP437 and include a <base href=".."/> pointing to the root directory of weblegends.
      • CP437 is important, because \n will appear as a black filled square with a white circle in it to users.
      • For pages with no slashes in the suffix, omit the <base/> element. For pages with one slash, use <base href=".."/>, for two slashes use <base href="../.."/>, and so on.
      • See df-ai's weblegends handler for an example.

00:58 <BenLubar> ah, that explains why my video games were lagging
00:59 <lethosor> and that probably explains why the build took ~3 hours too

Yes! You can install df-ai in your copy of Dwarf Fortress and then pretend I'm sitting with you in front of your computer.

Maybe I will skip all the DF stuff and just pretend you are sitting with me in front of the computer. Thanks for coming!

  • Three releases just now:

The crazy thing about BuildMaster is that I can orchestrate a release and find out about it existing an hour later.
