URL that gives a small response
-
Is there some url that just gives you the current time or something? I just need a thing to periodically test an http client's connectivity.
Of course I can use google.com but that gives you a bunch of html and stuff. I've tried looking around for (e.g.) something that returns the current time but all I've seen are Serious RESTful APIs that require registration and an API key and that is way more than I'm looking for.

How about http://gstatic.com/generate_204

Write a small server that outputs its time yourself?
Should just be a single line of node.js, I'm sure.

One line too many.

Why not just
ping 8.8.8.8
's equivalent in whatever language you're using? Not HTTP, but connectivity is connectivity is connectivity.
-
@Maciejasjmj I actually want a bit more than connectivity, namely some response string. I ended up using @loopback0 's one.
-
@hungrier you can't use a @loopback0 if you wanna test connectivity outside your router though
-
@ben_lubar Or the Microsoft one: http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txt

So you want to know which server to DoS attack?

And a single line of response, but it is only visible after loading jQuery :P

But my program is kind of like a bot, and as we all know it's impossible to use bots with Discourse.

du-uh.As an added bonus, this will give you a speed-up loop for free. In a few years from now, change the URL and boast about the performance improvement.

He asked for a small response, not MBs of client JS that would eventually generate a 403 – Not Welcome Here page.

502 Gateway Error
is a small response.
-
@loopback0 However, "quick" is probably implied in his OP. Whatever else,
502 OK
ain't quick.

Someone should really create a username that begins with one, just to complain about it breaking...

"You're doing it wrong"
"You're banned"

Discocode probably forbids it. It'll break their routing shit too so rather than fix that, they'll just have banned such characters,

Once circumcised always circumcised! sorry but that little ą lost its appendage to get more opportunities for interdiscourse.
