But The Ring had Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul engraved on it, not an image.
-
@PJH How does it make any difference. Still praying to a God that doesn't exist.
At least Lord of the Rings came out recently and it is obviously fiction.
-
@xaade That it didn't matter because God doesn't exist.
Got is like the Elite Selling Crew ... "He does exist because he don't exist, but he does exist".

@dcon For some cunts it must seem real.
BTW the Elite Selling Crew of Clapton never existed.
-
Prayer could have significant health benefits whether you believe God exists or not. Even if it's nothing more than a mental exercise, it could help reduce stress and produce a more positive outlook on life.
-
@anotherusername The same could be said about meditation that doesn't require a belief in the divine.
-
@lucas1 It could.

Doesn't change the argument. Like I said in the other thread.
The Bible warns about making graven images. Lady was praying to a graven image and now looks stupid.
It also warns about other things like making oaths with strangers, being lazy, etc.
It doesn't make those warning any less valid because the context includes a god.
-
@xaade said in In the name of the Father, and of the Son and ...:
It also warns about other things like
- a man sleeping with another man
- how to correctly rape a slave
- not to eat shellfish
- not to mix fabrics

@xaade I had some lovely pork loins cooked in a milk sauce a while back. Also, things like lasagna have a white sauce as part of them

Well, you certainly don't have to worry about it. You're not praying to an idol.

Nope, that was added later. The original is just cooking an animal in its mother's milk.

The is implicit in pretty much any post I make a bulleted list in.

Like so many other points in the ceremonial portions of the Law of Moses, the prohibition on cooking a kid in its mother's milk was about idolatry. It was a reference to a specific pagan ritual that the people of that time would have been familiar with. (Later generations... not so much. Which is why they ended up thinking it was about cooking rather than being about idolatry.)

I thought I was familiar with a lot of that sort of background, but that's a new one to me; makes sense, though. Details? ETA: @PJH's link says there's no evidence for it being a pagan ritual, so that makes it even more intriguing.
-
@masonwheeler @HardwareGeek pure speculation. There is no evidence whatsoever of such a ritual ever existing.
-
As a total guess, it might simply be a law to emphasize the sanctity of motherhood.

Yeah that feels sacrilegious. Only a sick God could have made that up!

I don't know which passage @ben_lubar had in mind, but Leviticus 19:20 seems to be related to the subject - it doesn't say how to do the deed, just what to do about it afterwards:
English translation, 1611 King James' Version:
And whosoever lieth carnally with a woman, that is a bondmaid, betrothed to an husband, and not at all redeemed, nor freedom given her; she shall be scourged; they shall not be put to death, because she was not free.
Here's a more modern version, but it is likely based on the KJV text rather than the either the Hebrew or the Koine Greek of the Septuagint version:
If any man has sex relations with a servant-woman who has given her word to be married to a man, and has not been made free for a price or in any other way, the thing will be looked into; but they will not be put to death because she was not a free woman.
Basically, what it is says is that while the evil hussy was still to blame because she let the man have sex with her (whether she wanted to have sex with him or not really wasn't taken into consideration at all, nor were things like whether she fought back, whether she was sober or even awake when it happened, etc), but she shouldn't be killed for it because she was a slave and might just have been under a wee bit of pressure to let him do what he wanted to.
OK, so that's an exaggeration. It actually says that she should be interrogated to see if she was willing, and if it she was forced into it then they wouldn't put her to death. Note that while the second 'translation' glosses over how the investigation was to be conducted, the use of the word 'scourge' in the older version makes it pretty plain that the authorities were to conduct an, ah, enhanced interrogation on the skanky bitch who obviously tempted the poor dude into it, totes for real. I can only assume that if the Judge takes the enhancement a bit too far, then the owner would be compensated for the accidental loss of his property, oh yeah sorry about that and thanks for the ten-spot earlier.

@ScholRLEA @ben_lubar I believe that "what's appropriate punishment in a case of adultery or rape" is quite far from "how to correctly rape".
