John Glenn's short, short life
-
I was on the phone with my Mom and she mentioned that, back in 1962 when John Glenn was slated to go into orbit, there were concerns that it would shorten his life. Well, it turns out to be fact: if he hadn't gone on that space flight he would have lived to 105. Instead of dying at a mere 95.
July 18, 1921 to December 8, 2016
Pass it on: spacewalks shorten your life. John Glenn is the proof.

@CoyneTheDup I'd love to know how long Tsutomu Yamaguchi might have lived if he hadn't been at both Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

At the same time? That's quite the feat.

Nope. At Hiroshima on August 6th, and Nagasaki on August 9th. Each when the respective bombs were dropped.

I caught a bit of news last night night and the talking head made a statement along the lines of, "He was just 95 years old." My wife and I were amused by that but maybe this explains it.

Wow. I mean, like, wow. I wonder how many times lightning has missed him.

Exactly.
Come on, people, I'm trying to get a fake news conspiracy meme phenomenon going here, as an experiment. I need much more
excitementoutrage than this.

There were a lot of people at Hiroshima who were also at Ngasaki later. Well, very fine, particulate, wind-borne pieces of them anyways.
-
@Lorne-Kates Not many of them, though, who made the papers when they finally died of stomach cancer in 2010.

It's weirder than that, because Nagasaki was one of the evacuation points from Hiroshima, while others (like Yamaguchi) were in Hiroshima for business and had returned to their homes and jobs in Nagasaki. At least 150 of the survivors of the first bomb were killed by the second.
Tsutomu Yamaguchi was not the only one to survive both bombings, but he was the one who survived the longest, and the one who was recognized by the Japanese government for it.
Oh, and the story he always told was that he was reporting his injuries to his managers, who didn't believe a word he was saying and were on the verge of firing him for lying when the second bomb fell.

From my grandma's point of view, that was valid. She made it to 104.
