Trivia time: did you know??????????????

  • Did you know that the thing circled in red (by my unsteady drunken hand using a trackpad while in bed) is a resize widget?

    0_1481908219342_huh.png

The answer is no, no you did not because it doesn't look anything like any pane resize widget I've ever seen here on planet Earth.

What it should look like, fortunately Paint lets you draw straight lines by holding shift because I'm still in bed:

    0_1481908280563_huh - Copy.png

If you recognize the black circle with the arrows on the left of the pane's border as a resize widget, please tell me which planet you arrived from and where your UFO is currently located.

No. I knew it was a resize widget, because I am not functionally retarded.

It has the standard "resize" mouse pointer on it. That's an even older and more recognizable symbol than whatever the heck two lines are meant to mean.

  • @Polygeekery Oh. Right. The only reason I got it wrong is because I'm literally retarded. Silly me.

Why would I hover my mouse over a strange thing I don't recognize and I don't know what it does? And how does that help on computers that have touchscreens like, hm, maybe like the laptop I'm using to type this right now?

I guess when you're retarded like me you just don't know you're supposed to hover your mouse over the thing that looks nothing like a resize widget when you're hunting for a way to resize the pane. I'm so goddamned retarded. I'm just going to sit here and eat paint.

  • mod

@blakeyrat Who is hovering? There's no hovering involved. :wtf:

Look, if you go to resize a window in your Windows computer, the mouse turns into a symbol, meaning "you're about to resize". That exact symbol is the symbol on the widget. No need to hover, it's already there.

For Blakey, since he is already ranting as I type it: the icon has a symbol which is the same as a standard resize cursor on Windows on it, but the cursor that appears while you hover over the element is a usual link cursor.

And it is clickable in addition to being draggable, which makes for one very confused metaphor.

It conveys the idea of "resize" a lot better than the lines you drew. Whoever first decided that the lines were the way to go was not thinking of a way to easily convey function to the user.

You've been trained by bad UI, and now you're bitching because when you come across better UI, it breaks your expectations. Which is ironic, because we've all seen you bitch about bad UI.

And who said you need to hover your cursor over the resize control? All @Yamikuronue said is that it looks like the standard resize cursor. You know, that special cursor you get when you hover over the edge of a resizable window? No one said anything about needing to hover over the control that you're currently bitching about.

  • I have to agree with blakey that it's a bit poorly designed, usually resizable panels have a line in them that you can grab anywhere, as a "handle". The "clean" design of NodeBB means lots of useful visual cues are missing.

But, at least the symbol is the right one. Clearly it makes something go up or down (although you might expect it to open a fancy menu or something). The red boob on the bottom right, on the other hand, makes zero sense.

  • Wait, we can log bugs about the icon vomit that is this forum software?

For what is worth, I agree with blakey. Do you all honestly think the current design is better than his proposal? Or are you all just assholes?

  • @Polygeekery Does it matter what I answer? I've already been tried, judge, jury and executioner.

The answer is "no", as I've stated about 500 times, but there's no point in me typing that because you won't believe it and you'll just rehash it again in a week.

  • @blakeyrat said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

Did you know that the thing circled in red (by my unsteady drunken hand using a trackpad while in bed) is a resize widget?

It doesn't resize for me. That's because I've had to put in custom css that explicitly sets the height of the Composer window to near 100%. Because NodeBB is barely usable, and their "super fancy awesome" css+js stack kept miscalculating the dynamic height of the window. So the window would end up with top:-533%, and would be inaccessible off the bottom of the screen.

Also, it doesn't do a resize cursor on hover, it does a pointer:

I think it is. But also, Blakey thinks disagreeing with him is bullying, and I have 0 patience for that kind of bullshit today.

They seem like they're trying to evoke the border between resizable panes. I'm not sure which would be more obvious to me coming in cold, but the arrows seem like a reasonable choice.

  • I wanted to resize my typing pane one time and I noticed the symbol and tried it.

I don't think you're retarded for not noticing until you accidentally clicked it.

  • @boomzilla said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

There's no hint that they can be dragged, though. I can see users thinking "oh, I thought you could only click it and make it fullscreen!" once they get it pointed out or discover it by accident.

  • @Maciejasjmj Yeah, but I'm not certain a couple of floating lines would make that point, either.

  • :belt_onion:

@jaming said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

Do you all honestly think the current design is better than his proposal?

Yes. An arrow pointing up is obvious. A horizontal line is not.

I'm not saying that NodeBB is well designed, because clearly it is not. In most cases it is actually worse than Community Server. But his proposed design is just more of the same retarded, meaningless bullshit that has infected most software these days. Quite ironic coming from someone who has spent so much time ranting about bad UI.

Or are you all just assholes?

    You must be new here.

  • mod

Probably the best idea would be to go with the desktop paradigm: just make the damn dividing line draggable. I want the composer to be bigger, so I grab the edge and drag it. Done.

  • @boomzilla said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

@Maciejasjmj Yeah, but I'm not certain a couple of floating lines would make that point, either.

I don't particularly like this metaphor, but it's common, especially on mobile screens. Not sure what it's supposed to represent - I think it's like those thin rows on battery covers that you slide your nail in and pull it down? No clue.

  • @Yamikuronue said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

just make the damn dividing line draggable

Only point I would have against that is on tablets, if I have the composer open and scroll the thread, if I accidentally get too close to the line, I'd just resize the composer instead of scrolling.

Granted, for anyone who would scroll left handed on a tablet with the composer open, that problem still exists with the resize button as it is.

  • Grade A Premium Asshole

@Captain Yeah, I never noticed it until now.

I think this is way better than two horizontal lines as well - although it wouldn't be a bad idea to move the element to the right (since red boob and discard/submit are there already) or to the center. But on the other hand, the editing window is on the left side and that's probably where you are when you need to resize the composer... I dunno.

It's good to see Blakey back and strong as ever :D

  • @blakeyrat I think you just kinda suck at explaining yourself. Combined with the generally aggressive attitude and exaggeration of everything, people get a bit defensive.

That's pretty much what he proposed, only with an actual visual cue by making the line wider and adding the three lines in there. It's actually how the Windows ≥ 8 does the split-screen thing (in Windows 10 you can even do it with desktop windows).

Edit: just this small change would be a huge improvement:

Let me give you a hint:
Borders between two areas can be resized in applications.

The double line applies to the whole border.

Nodebb's shitty editor control can only be resized by dragging the arrow button.

Blakeyrat didn't just complain about the icon.

    1. Correct on his complaining. Mostly he complained about people's responses to him.
    2. He literally drew in a small resize widget that was two short parallel lines. Which I had previously addressed.
    3. Not everything is about blakey.

  • @Yamikuronue I think bullying is bullying.

    Look at this thread.

The very first reply, a complete knee-jerk by the way because it came way too quick for there to be any actual consideration to it, was that I'm functionally retarded. Because it's impossible for the holy NodeBB, brought down to us by Jesus himself, to be less than perfect in any way, apparently. Or, more likely, because Polygeekery wanted to call me stupid and me making a thread gave him an opening.

Pro-tip, Polygeekery: if you just want to call me stupid, you can use Steam or Twitter or Skype or even PMs and do it without polluting my threads. Knock yourself out.

Then Yami comes in and also says I'm wrong, then later that I'm imagining that people are bullying me. Then a bit later, AGREES WITH ME THAT THE CONTROL SHOULD BE CHANGED.

Now how am I supposed to interpret Yami's first post as anything except "telling me I'm wrong for the sake of telling me I'm wrong"? Because when Yami exited "Kneejerk Insult Blakeyrat Mode 1.0" and actually spent a few minutes thinking about it:

@Yamikuronue said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

Probably the best idea would be to go with the desktop paradigm: just make the damn dividing line draggable. I want the composer to be bigger, so I grab the edge and drag it. Done.

she agreed with my assessment that the widget should be changed, at least partially.

So yes, I'm reacting to the bullying as if it were bullying. Shocking. How else am I supposed to react to what I'm seeing in this thread?

@boomzilla said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

Yeah, but I'm not certain a couple of floating lines would make that point, either.

I use about 50 applications with resizeable panes, both on desktop and mobile, and every single one of them uses either the parallel lines or the three dots icon (and the three dots one is BRAND new, the parallel lines have been used for decades) to communicate that the pane border can be moved.

I've never seen the NodeBB icon used anywhere, ever. And even if I had, that doesn't excuse that it's lined-up with the post avatars and has no visual link to the border of the pane. There's nothing visually marking it as part of the pane. (Which is, to add another complaint, invisible-- or at least so close to invisible I can't see it.)

But obviously NodeBB is perfect, and the only problem is me.

  • @anonymous234 said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

I think you just kinda suck at explaining yourself.

I posted a screenshot of exactly what it should look like. I'm not sure how I could explain it any better than that.

I agree that your version with the resize icon attached to a clearly visible black border is far better than the current design. It's still not the standard widget used to indicate "this pane can be resized" used in any application I've seen.

@aliceif said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

And do you really have to act this way towards blakeyrat ..?

Hey they have months of "calling Blakeyrat stupid for no reason" saved up.

  • @blakeyrat said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

I use about 50 applications with resizeable panes, both on desktop and mobile, and every single one of them uses either the parallel lines or the three dots icon (and the three dots one is BRAND new, the parallel lines have been used for decades) to communicate that the pane border can be moved.

I don't recall seeing parallel lines like that, but maybe I've missed it. As I said, I think it's supposed to evoke a border between panes, which modern flat bullshit design has done away with. The three dots thing has been around a while as something in a border between panes to indicate that the border can be dragged.

  • @boomzilla For what it's worth, it looks like I'm out of date. Visual Studio (and related apps, like SQL Server Management Studio) no longer use the parallel lines widget. Nor does Windows Explorer or Excel. All of these used to a couple versions ago, and I think removing the icon is a terrible mistake, but... there we go. However, all of those applications (sans Explorer folder windows) have a deep trench with an obvious 3D "behind" appearance to make the pane border extremely visible, and allow dragging from any point along the border with appropriate mouse cursor.

Gmail is using the three dots indicator, as is Windows Explorer (in a different place-- good consistency there, Microsoft.)

Nothing uses the black circle with a two-headed arrow in it. I know I'm functionally retarded and all, but I honestly don't know how I'd be expected to glean that:

    1. That's a widget
    2. That's a widget that applies to the pane border and not the avatar icons (where it's actually located)
    3. That widget can be used to resize the pane

  • I don't think the parallel lines are the most common way of showing it, but their meaning is clear. IMO blakey's version might not still be perfect but it is better than the current thing.
The way the pointer changes when mousing over the thing suggests you can only click it, not slide it, even if the icon does suggest it slides. It's an odd design choice.

They should have just made the whole line draggable (and more visible) but as usual, things have to be reinvented and not use existing solutions to existing problems.

  • @blakeyrat said in Trivia time: did you know??????????????:

And even if I had, that doesn't excuse that it's lined-up with the post avatars and has no visual link to the border of the pane.

It's overlaying the pane and crossing the pane border. The problem is that the border of the pane is a 1px line of #F8F8F8 pixels...
