It's a shitty youtube video that will probably crash NodeBB because our plugins suck.

@anonymous234 That first guy is an asshole for letting his dog run around in a part without paying attention!
Filed Under: It's probably a dangerous dog, too!
Also Filed Under: Why does he have the new Zelda already? What a show off

ALSO MANDATORY SEX JOKE TIME!
Nintendo Switch: Because sometimes you want your Wii on top, and othertimes not.

This is pretty much what I hoped they were going to do when they were talking about it initially. It's a very Nintendo thing to do, and very much the next iteration after the U.
I worry a bit about the connections and slots on the side, but it seems cool enough.

What's Nintendo?
-
Cliff notes for those of us who ain't gonna watch a fucking video at work?
-
@Weng Modular and portable console/handheld hybrid.
-
@Weng from what I've seen, it's a handheld with detachable controllers that plugs into your TV for home use. Takes cartriges rather than disks

Basically it merged the PSP PS3 simultaneous play into one device.
combined with this
-
-
@xaade Also, I noticed, that while they reduced the console/gameboy pair into one device, they multiplied their accessories by 3 times.
-
@coderpatsy Nintendo had #courage well before Apple. GBA SP predates Iphone 7 by over a decade
-
@xaade I don't know if they have, though.
I don't fully get what this is. It could be their next handheld after the 3DS, with them still selling a motion-based mainline console, or they could make it have the wiimote support and really be down to one device.
Since they're Nintendo, they'll keep making consoles even if the others give up, for a while at least. And they can get away with it, because people love their inhouse games.

Until we get details, I'm pretty convinced.
They've been paring down their console in relation for a couple of generations now. It wouldn't surprise me if they're just going to "Switch" to a different market.
-
I'm just now curious, if they're designing this to be both a home and handheld console...will this get the next iteration of Pokemon? If so, will this mean there'll be a Pokemon game that is, from the beginning, built to work on a TV? That could be pretty awesome.
-
Short version?
It's like they turned a WiiU tablet controller into a console of its own where instead of the main WiiU console, you have a dock.
The system appears to use cartridges that are approximately SD card size. They fit into the top of the tablet.
The controller parts of the tablet are detachable, so you could use the tablet as a tiny screen to play games on using said controller. The tablet itself has a thing attached to it
The two pieces you disconnect from the tablet can be used either as separate controllers or as a single controller... although the piece of plastic shown used to use them together as a standard controller does not come with the system.
They also showed it working with what appeared to be a WiiU Pro Controller. No idea if it works with standard Wii controllers as I didn't see anything that looked like the Wii bar... granted, the Wii bar is just a piece of plastic with two infrared lights at a fixed distance.
One major problem I see is that you cannot use the tablet when using the system with a TV due to how the console is put into its dock.
Side note: They showed Splatoon being played on the system, but it's unclear how you would have WiiU compatibility with no disc slot... so this may very well be a new edition of Splatoon.
-
@powerlord I imagine they're going with digital distribution for old titles, and that the dock has a port for the motion bar (after all, that stuff wouldn't make any sense portable).

From what I've now read, it's not compatible with older controllers and the WiiU Pro looking controller is actually the Switch Pro Controller.
-
The impressive parts of this are:
-
The battery lasts long enough to play at home, drive to the park, stare at some trees while playing, drive to the airport, harass a complete stranger who really just wants to play her game, play while on a flight, land back at the same airport which you left from, take a car home while playing in the back seat, and only then be plugged back in to the dock for charging.
-
It can do all this, fit in one hand, and play Skyrim with what looks like decent frame rates.
-
Professional Splatoon teams know enough not to rely on a Surface tablet and just use paper instead.
To be fair, I played Skyrim at absolute minimum settings on an Atom 3735 powered Stream tablet and it wasn't terrible, so (2) is believable, but unless there's a Nintendo-branded car battery stuffed inside that jacket, I'm having trouble with (1).
I'm totally fine with (3).
-
-
@DCRoss To be fair, you're exposing a Surface Tablet to a lot of elements when you're standing on a football field.

So, apparently, the press conference today didn't answer two of most important questions for Nintendo customers: Will you be able to play the games you downloaded for your Wii U? And which of the old controller will continue to work?
The fact that they didn't say anything about backwards compatibility at all leads me to the conclusion that controllers will not be compatible at all and that there will be no migration path from the Wii U. Which means Nintendo just lost a potential customer, because I'm sure as hell not going to pay additional money for a second digital download of the same game within a year and I also don't want to throw away controllers I bought less than two years ago.
-
@asdf I really don't get what it is with this generation of consoles and dropping back-compat. After all, it was a major selling point of the PS2, PS3, X360, and the Wii, and to a lesser extent, the Wii U, DS, and 3DS.
-
@RaceProUK
I get that they don't want to officially replace the 3DS yet, especially since the new 3DS is still selling really well and has a slightly different design (robust, child-safe toy with 3D screen). I'm pretty sure they're waiting for the initial sales numbers before they decide whether they want to discontinue the DS systems at all.But I would be pretty offended if they told customers who stuck with them despite the Wii U's sub-par hardware to go fuck themselves and buy their games again.

PS3
That's a pretty short memory. The early US versions had the Emotion engine inside. When it came to Europe a year later this had been replaced by software emulation. About six months after that they removed it completely.
The Xbone seems to be heading in the right direction.

The thing is, if they don't make it backwards compatible then most people that do care will grumble and buy it anyway.

Except it only works with an Internet connection, as it has to download the game that's already on the disc. Unless it actually downloads from the disc, in which case MS's FAQ is very badly worded.
At least with the others, you don't need to download a game you already have on disc.

Presumably the downloaded version is modified to run properly on the Xbox One or whatever.
-
What about that paid subscription service?
Fuck consoles, fuck them very much.

well.... let's see..... AAA games range from 60ish GB for games such as GTA V, to... OMFWTFBBQ GB for games such as World of WobCraft...
Let us take an optimistic approach and say that wobcraft is a ways off the far end of the bellcurve and that about 60 gig is the standard size of an AAA game.
so we need 60GB of data, and because of the nature of art assets and models for the games it's mostly uncompressible (textures and prerendered scenes are stored compressed and models, while being quite compressible, are a vanishingly small proportion of the total size at rest of the game.)
now according to a little research the Xbone uses Bluray XL/DL discs with a capacity of 50GB. This means that if my assumption of game size is correct the full game cannot fit on the disc. However, as my estimate was based off PC games, it is possible my estimate is off. Some further digging seems to indicate that the Xbone renders games at 720p and upscales if necessary to fit your device, if this is the case then the art assets could easily be lowered in quality by one part in six (after compression, ~= 1 in 36 before compression) and achieve game sizes that would fit on the disc.
Well..... except for Day0 DLC. Because of the time it takes to press discs, get them to pass verification and distribute them some game companies have taken to vaerifying a prerelease portion of the game and then taking advantage of day0 DLC to get several months extra development time to actually finish the game before release, which would mean that even if the entire game is on the disc as soon as you connect to the internet the game will see that there is an update to the game and the console will dutifully download it for you.

We're talking about Xbox 360 games, so it's nothing like 60GB. GTA 5, for example:
This initial install will require an Xbox 360 Hard Drive or an external 16GB USB flash drive with at least 8 GB of free space.

oh. the 360..... yeah that's different.
/me wonders where she got xbone out of that discussion

isn't that World of WubCraft?
-
@accalia If they were smart they'd fill the disc with 50GB of random assets they might need in the future and then limit the updates to code that used those.
-
@anonymous234 Or just two bits, then updates just need to include them in the right order
-
@accalia Either work.
-
@accalia Fhtagn!
-
But they announced Xenoblade 2, which means I'll probably buy one right away anyway.

The XBox One has brought back-compat back, almost two years ago now. Sure, it's technically an emulator, and yes the individual studios have to give approval for their games to be processed, but the library of back-compat 360 games for the One is growing constantly.

My understanding is that it's downloading the emulation patch for that game, not the entire game.
-
@abarker Still not as good as the back-compat on older consoles, which could play pretty much the entire library straight from the disc/cart.

Ah, in that case, that's not so bad. Still a bit crap, but not unreasonable.
